I think from memory that you can get upto 40p a mile tax free, but if your employer is only willing to give you 20p a mile then thats what you`ll get, after all even at £5+ a gallon assuming 35mpg you`ll still have £2 per gallon tax free.
If you want this confrimed by HMRC then i`m sure they are in the phone book.
good luck with your new job btw:beer:

You can't claim the other 20p from the inland revenue. however as you are allowed to be paid 40p per mile under inland revenue rules, you can claim the TAX you paid on the extra 20p allowed. You have to wait until the end of the tax year to claim it back, but it can add up to a useful sum.

    e.g Tax Allowance 40p per mile x 2500 miles = £1000
    Amount paid by emplyer 20p per mile x 2500 miles = £500

    Difference = £500 x Tax Rate 20% =

    Refund due £100

doesnt always work like that as around town u mileage costs are higher and the amount is also supposed to cover wearntear on u vehicle i worked it out on my car and get roughly 7 miles a litre which makes the cost about 17.2p a mile and thats just u petrol then u got to add on the extra costs of ware and tare and even if u say 1p mile or 1p per 5 miles for parts add up how many parts there is on a car and then work it out. its not as cut and dry as u think and costs are very high.

Yes, this would be a little like a self-employed person claiming expenses against their gross income. You don't get the expenses paid; you just get tax relief as if you had not earned that money. Many employed persons claim expenses too.

That said, you may not be able to claim petrol expenses against your income in this instance as IR may view the 20p you get from your employer as covering your motoring costs. Remember that the 40p figure is an allowance not a recommendation. Before the huge petrol inflation I used to work on a figure of 10p per mile actual petrol costs. The other 30p per mile that Inland Revenue allow your employer to pay tax free is intended to allow for a percentage of wear & tear to your vehicle and other running costs. They think it is quite generous which is why they havent reviewed it in so long.

    Hope this helps!

  • I too work for a care agency. I receive nothing from my employer for mileage and have been told that I can claim it back at the end of the year. My petrol is costing a lot as I work mornings, evenings and nights. I'm unsure about how to claim it but like the other lady said, I was just happy to get the job. I also don't know what proof I need to claim the expenses, although I have been keeping a record on my working sheets. It's hard to tell because the car is also the family car and used by others. I also had to buy my own uniform £25 (washed everyday). I had to buy my photos for my ID, £5, pay for my own CRB and POVA, £42. A full day of training which was unpaid. No allowance for mobile phone bill. The company also charges us £1 a week for admin of our payslips. Although I love the work and the people, the hours can be erratic and some weeks more hours than others (which is understandable). Does anyone know how I claim back expenses from inland revenue, and what evidence I need?
  • Tbh i`d say you need to find a better employer.
  • You need to fill in a form P87 (Available from HMRC website) at the end of the financial year. Make sure you keep all your payslips as they may ask for evidence of your mileage, although they didn't ask me for evidence when I did mine last year. The way I worked mine out was to add up all the mileage payments on my payslips over the year, then divide by 15p per mile = number of miles I have done. It's worthwhile doing as it can add up to quite a bit - I do around 150 miles a week as a home carer and we only get 15p per mile.

    £25 per uniform :O

Blimey! I've worked for various homecare agencies and sorry but IMO you are being robbed!
Most care companys charge for CRB checks, but of those i;ve worked for they pay you at least half of it back wen you have been there for 3 months, same with the uniform, altough some give it out free.
Not paying for milage is a joke, and charging you for payslips!
I'd find another care company to work for if i were you, there are always vacancies and always companies.
The hours issue will be the same but that is part and parcel of the job.
I love working as a homecarer, currently on maternity leave from workin in a home but when i go back I'm going back to homecare.
