From a detached to a semi - am I MAD??

  • Simply answer - yes you are mad! :-))

I have had a terrace, then a semi, now a detached. Would i EVER go back? Not until i had sold everything else i posisbly could to avoid it.

Terrace house - one side a nice old lady who i didnt even know existed, other side was a young chap who again rarely heard but knew he was there.. He started to rent it out to a single mum with 4 kids by 4 dads. Kylie, Chesney, chantelle etc etc. She used to bellow at them from when they woke up (usually 5am) until they went to sleep (usually 11pm) - guess they had a nice nap whilst i was at work!

Semi - Lovely old couple who i didnt hear anything from for 3 years, gradually the lady started to go gradually deaf, thats when the TV started to get louder and louder. I used to hear the stereo at 6:30 everyday (she too used to get 40 winks mid arvo)...

Detached? - Awesome - Mortgage doubled, it was painful for first 3 months but havent looked back and wouldnt think twice about EVER having neighbours i couldnt just switch off from. If i could ever not afford i would go back to a 3 bed, or even a 2 bed detached before i went to a Semi.

(Missus had a flat when we met - only stayed there about 5 times ever!)

Amen  Been there done that, living in a detached house is bliss, I could never go back. If I need more space I'll build an extension.

    Hello Avenida,
Are you sure the semi is bigger. How do you know?
What is the exact square meters of living space in the two property's.
    Have you measured them both???
Let us know the actual difference in size as that may influence any advise you will get.

What age is the semi? If it's a character semi then it's probably over 60 years old and will need work doing to it.

I've lived in a 100+ year old terraced house. Absolutely fabulous, rarely heard the neighbours (young family one side and retired couple the other side). Solid house, cheap to heat but lousy for parking as we only had one space from rear access lane or on the street outside.

Next house was a 200+ detached house. Hated it. Damp, cold etc. Current house is 1950s semi on a very large plot with masses of parking. Do hear the neighbours when DIYing but to buy an equivalent sized detached house in the same area will set us back over £100k. We could sell up and buy a modern detached and bank money but all the modern houses in my area are small and on such small plots neigbhours would know everytime I put my knickers on the line or OH farted in the garden.:o

The best way to answer your initial question is to ask yourself another question:

"Do I have a cats chance in hell of finding a buyer for my house."
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

WE've got a semi, it's ok, it's and end one so we don't really hear the elderly neighbour. It costs a bomb to heat though.

I think you'll find that on average, a detached house costs even more to heat!!!

IMHO tot up the fees and taxes you'd pay in moving, then consider what improvments the same spend would give on your current house.

The semi is 5 years old and my house is 40 year old

I can't find out the square footage but the semi has a bigger living room and a downstairs loo and a bigger bathroom.

I agree detached housing are hard to heat

I think that a modern semi/terraced should have enough sound proofing and insulation to prevent any noise filtering through.
