Haggling car insurance?

Ado!

I have a online quote of £2100 from virgin for my car. Is it worth ringing them and asking them to give it me cheaper/discounts or will it always be a fixed price? because im guessing the guys on the other end of the phone are prob filling in the same form!

Deposit to be paid by Credit/Debit Card £404.25
1st monthly instalment by Direct Debit £167.01
Followed by 9 monthly instalments £167.06

TOTAL £2,074.80

In my first month do i pay the 404.25 or 404.25 + 167.01???

Its always worth a try - but first, shop around.

I assume you're very young, and the car is a high group?

any virgin finance codes for discounts would also help!

Holy cow what a cost! The same car would cost me about £240 with no NCB and £120 with full NCB.

Regards reducing the cost, it's always worth phoning, but I doubt you'll get any discount, you are a new customer to them, so they won't budge. If you have a previous insurer with a renewal quote, then go to them and ask for their "retentions dept". But you can't expect the same from Virgin as you are not a current customer expecting to be "retained".

Only thing I can suggest is the £75 cash back offered by Prudential through Quidco
    http://www.quidco.com/finance/life-auto/

I can also suggest phoning around using the yellow pages - the old fasioned method, you might find a cheaper quote, they will ask you for your cheapest quote so far, up to you how you play them, give them a fake figure or ask them to give you a quote before you tell them if it beats your best offer so far, then haggle with them for a better premium.

And Admiral give a 10 month NCB, so your NCB builds up quicker. Watch out for Admiral, they renew automatically - , but also be aware that admiral does not have a fixed discount percentage for NCB years they are a very strange company to deal with. You should read the whole policy of whichever company you are considering to go with.

Also as a named driver with some like Direct line you could build up a NCB.

Your first installment would be £404 then after 1 month will be 167. But you should double check on the exact date the 167 will become due.

As long as you don't put stupid alloys on it and tint the windows I'm sure you could get a lower cost.

Have you taken Passplus? If not, take a look at the IAM as that is cheaper... I did Passplus too and the IAM 'Skills For Life' was far more useful. As you're under 25 you'll get a £20 voucher off the £85 cost.

About the insurance quote, could you pop a parent or two on there as that can reduce the cost? It would also mean someone else in the family can drive your car when needed.

If you can't afford the insurance you're priced out unfortunately. Only options available are to

    a) change car to something crap you probably won't like
    b) change where you live to a lower risk area (move home)

or wait until you get older. I checked how much insurance would have been if I was 17 and was over £3,000. I paid £800 at 26 but had only just learned to drive at that time.

Or if you can't pay a full year, pay monthly.
