car not me!!!

i have a 2001 citroen xsara - had it from new. due to lack of money since i had to leave work, it has not been cared for as it should over the past few years. it still runs ok though, apart from poss needing new battery.

anyway, am seriously considering leasing (once my dla renewal comes through) and am wondering what to do with my old car.

A few of the symptoms -
  • no front bumper (had slight bumper to bumper crash)
  • front bonnet doesnt close properly (due to above)
  • 3 quite big scratches on passenger side doors
  • airbag warning light has always been on
  • no service history for past 3 years
  • a few other minor cosmetic things
it has passed its mot with all this stuff though, and has recently had new brakes all round. The current tax/mot runs out next month, and i dont really want to spend loads of money on it, esp if i will be leasing - not leasing through dla, as i receive the low mobility componant.

so, once i have finished with all the waffle, i guess what i am asking is what to do with it? I have had no experience of scrap dealers - would they be interested, and do they pay? Or, should i ebay it for a couple of hundred pound? To be honest, i am not expecting anything for it, but if i can manage something, that would be great, as i am moving house soon as well!

any thoughts?

I'd ebay it as it is with full and frank description - if no interest then scrap dealers pay from £50 to £150 for cars round here (Cheshire) and they'll come and take them away.

excellent tubbee, thanks for your opinion. Even £50 would get me a cheapo fridge!! :j

re the ebay idea - do you think i should start off at a set amount - or just list at start 99p? (it intrigues me to see what people would bid, but i dont want to just give it away if i can get a little money)

Surely it is worth 'tarting' up a bit and getting a better price?

    Or..

You could get the parts and some bodywork done at a reasonable price. A basic service and MOT - it could be a nice little runner for someone.

    Or

If you are not worried about getting money for it - why don't you donate it to a cause that could do the above and use it for whatever they need? There are alot of charities etc that would be very grateful for your car. It would make you feel good too - whereas shoving it on ebay, won't give you any satisfaction but possibly fifty quid...

    Your call.

That car with an MOT will be worth £300-400.

But if they are not worried about the money - be a nice gift to someone. Sounds like they don't want the effort of doing anything with it.....

    Just a different view.
When my wife went onto motability we considered ourselves very lucky that someone I knew bought her old banger off her. Then about 6 months later we got a parking ticket.
I am guessing you didn't fill in the V5 and send it off yourself, or just handed it to the buyer.

i probably will get the tax and mot done next month - it will allow me more time to sort out my options.

A close family friend owns a garage, and he is usually up front and honest with me - thinks it should def pass, as had new brakes and exhaust over the past year. I am trying to think ahead really, as the lease options relieves me of the worry of finding extra money for repairs/tax etc.

re the charity option - i love the idea, and if i wasnt moving house, i would prob take that option, but at the moment, even a little extra money is better than nothing!!

On the grounds that your life is about to get filled with the stresses and strains of moving house I'd agree with the above as the simple way to get shot of the car for minimal effort and maximum return.
Definitely advertise with a minimum 99p reserve to stoke up interest and aim to end the auction on a Saturday or Sunday evening when people are home to bid. £300 to £400 sounds possible.

As you intend to tax and MOT the car - then I still think the charity idea is a good one - rather than scrap it, I am sure some deserving organisation would give you a reasonable price for it.

I sound like a right do gooder - but hate to see waste!!! Maybe worth asking around in your area if there is anyone that might be interested - is it the people carrier version? It could be used to take out disabled children/adults, or used to convey them back and forth to various centres/schools etc.

If the vehicle is safe - ie gets an MOT it would be worth alot in more than just money to someone.

    Good luck with the move.
