What time in notice period do you ask for PAC???

OK I appreciate this has probably already been answered before but I've tried to find the answer and can't???
Anyway my contract with Vodafone ends on 9th December 2005 and I want to cancel as soon as this 12 months is up to move to Three.
I understand that I have to give them a months notice i.e. 9th November 2005 but do I ask for my PAC code at this time or wait until nearer the end of the month?
Basically does asking for your PAC code cancel the contract and mean that you can't use your phone but still have to pay for it?
If not, and it only stops use of the phone when you use it, when is the best time to buy a new contract and give PAC to Three?
Really sorry if I sound really stupid but I don't really want to be paying for two phones for too long or one phone and not be able to use it!
Cheers

I would ask for the PAC code at the same time - it takes a while for it to come through anyway and then you would be able to move over as soon as you need to and are able to. HTH0

I've done it with Vodafone, just over a week ago,and it worked like this:
My 12 months is up on the 6th November,so I rung them within a month of it ending, and asked at what point I had to give notice.I was told I had to put it in writing,at any point from now,(Then) and once received,it would be put into effect.
I then asked about my PAC code, and was told, because I had asked for it,that was sufficient to serve as notice on my account, and I didn't need to put it in writing.
They then send it out to you within a week, and you then pass it onto your next provider, and it takes them about a week to switch it over.(I got it by post and sms.)
Now,because all this was done, with still 2 weeks of my old contract finishing,I have rung Vodafone, thinking I would be stung for the cost of the old phone, because my contract is not exactly 12 months old,and I was told,no,I wouldn't be stung, and I would only pay pro rata for my final bill.
My final switchover should take place tomorrow between 4.30pm and 8pm,so 3 have told me,and they've advised me not to use my phone during this time,as I may not get the full potential during the switchover.
Hope this helps.
Ken.
PS.Because it's not happened yet,and I still have a zillion free off peak minutes,I'm still using it.That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
yup - in short, use the pac request as your months notice to them. once the pac code is used by the new network it cancels your existing contract. you might want to get in there a few days early just in case as some places will do their very best to find a way to get that extra month out of you (month 13)."Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0

Thanks guys that's really helped.
So as I now understand it, I can ask Vodafone for my PAC code and that's enough for them to 'realise' that I want to cancel my 12 month contract. Then I order new phone (probably from Dialaphone as I can't seem to find a website that I'm 'comfortable' with) and once I have that and new temp number I can call Three and give them the PAC and that will automatically cancel my links with Vodafone.
I think that's right.
You've all been absolute stars, Cheers ears!!0 -
For what it's worth.....
My switchover was painless at about 11.30am today, and works a treat. My wife has now got my old phone,(V525) as she's still on Vodafone, but as I have 750 x-net minutes a month,we'll be no worse off, because if she rings me during the day,I ring her back from the office phone, and when not at work,I'll use my new 3 phone, and I've still got my old number.
Result.

A related question if I may please - I have a few phones on cashback deals (one OSPS, one CPW - both have been fine up to now), with the final payments due on receipt of the month 12 bill. As you pay in advance, in theory, this bill will arrive in plenty of time (December bill covers December) but has anyone experience of this? For the sake of an extra months payment, I would hate to loose the 6 month rebate (but don't want to pay for a 13th month if I can help it). I will no doubt have spotted a 12 month free line rental offer again by then - not bothered about the phone as happy with what I have but it seems rude to pay for minutes/texts if you can get free for a year!
Many thanks

Anon, if your contract ends on, for exmaple, 20th December and this is also your billing date, then you should receive your 12th bill sometime after 20th November. This will show the line rental payment for your 12th month. This is the bill you need to send to claim your cashback. I received my 12th bill a week ago and have sent it to e2Save.
Remember to give 30 days notice when cancelling your contract though. In the above example, I'd call '3' on the 18th November to give the notice. They'll try to tell you that you must call on the 20th November, as they did with me, but argue your way and say it's a minimum 30 days, not maximum!! They'll then put you throught to the relevant person. It took me 20 minutes to cancel and I had to speak to 3 different people, giving them all my details everytime! It was really annoying but I got there in the end.0
