I'm sorry but that is totally uncalled for. The benefits system is a total mine field and even people who are trained in it often have problems interpreting the rules as they change so fast and sometimes contradict each other.

The OP is in a situation that because of ill health s/he is unable to work and in in the unfortunate position of needing to claim benefits. Thats not benefit minded culture its a unfortunate fact for this person. I can totally understand how and why the OP is/was worried. The rules are complicated and it's very easy to fall foul of them if you aren't careful. That's why the CAB has waiting lists for appointments to see a welfare rights advisor, its nothing about tryin to fiddle the system or have your cake and eat it, it's about protecting yourself for the long term.

I am not sure if you saw the original post pre edit. This poor unfortunate soul with over £250,000 in cash and assets was actually bemoaning the fact that he would be unable to claim pension credit because he would have too much in savings. He also was somewhat upset about having to pay council tax when he didn't previously. I think the fact that he claims Income Support + Incapacity + DLA + Council tax benefit would suggest he has more than a passing acquaintance with the benefit systm

His post demonstrates quite admirably how greedy some people are when it comes to delving into the public purse. No wonder the benefit system needs an overhaul.

I see that the entire original post has been removed now, well that says it all and I am sure that everyone who read it knows the reason why. I am sure that everyone can come to their own conclusions without me spelling it out.

Thank you looby75. I didn't want to get into a position whereby I would have to claim benefits again - but feared I would. I'm glad you understand.

Thanks to good advice I now realise I will be able to live off the interest if I am careful and never claim benefit again - which is the scenario I was hoping for but unsure if it were possible, given that my car is old now and the house will need repairs/upkeep.
I mentioned the house in case there was a way I could use this asset somehow - downsize maybe, although it is a very modest place already, which I bought years before I became unwell.

Incidentally I am extremely appreciative of my home [which I worked so hard to buy and refurbish] and overwhelmed by the inheritance which I was not expecting at all. I appreciate it all believe me, in case anyone thinks otherwise.

I never ever want to be on benefit again - because of how people react to it. I am a genuine claimant just very thankful of the chance to get off it - and preparing for that day.

I would think people would be glad that someone is coming off it, not condemning my efforts at getting advice about how to get the best return from the assets I will have in the future.

    LOL at 'he'
A 'passing aquaintance with the benefit system' - means I get what I am entitled to and no more, whats wrong with that?
I am also entitled to live in the house I bought and worked hard on before I was unable to work due to illness which will affect my life expectancy.

I was just wondering if I could use this asset in any way when off benefits to make sure I could live without watching every penny.

If everyone was being so unreasonable Quatro, why delete your original post?

Could it possibly be that in retrospect, you realise how you ACTUALLY came across.........and it wasn't nice!!!!!!!

...And I deleted the thread healy, because I clearly posted in the wrong forum - my first time on this website!
And clearly there were people who just did not read it properly, assuming that stating facts was 'moaning'. I'm just fed up with my post being misread and misinterpreted - and my character brought into doubt.
Not 'greedy' just wanting to make sure I could live ok financially after this huge change in my circumstances.
    It's ok - I will be.

Actually, I did see the original post pre-edit. I paid a little bit of attention to read what he was actually saying: he was moaning because he believed he would not be allowed to spend ANY of his inheritance (because it is likely that at some point in the future he will need to return to claiming benefits) and calculated that his net income, interest from the capital plus non-means tested benefits minus council tax, would actually be rather less than the amount he receives at present -- the amount that the law says he needs to live on. Moaning about such a situation would be entirely reasonable. And his problem arose because he did not understand the deprivation of capital rule: and the benefits board is the right place to ask about this rule, which is after all fiendishly complicated.

All in all, I think he had a right to be worried; posted an intelligent question on the right board; and I am glad that further information about deprivation of capital has apparently cleared up his concern. As for the wording of the original post, yes, if read by the careless, the stupid, or the malicious it could be misunderstood. But the OP is not a lawyer nor an advertising copy-righter so it is unreasonable to expect him to right a statement that could not have been misunderstood.

Voyager - thank you for that support [appreciated], it's clear you understood my concern and also that I had misunderstood some rules initially. Maybe I wasn't articulate enough, too many seem not to have understood the content.

I am however female, not that it makes much difference.

My sons are a bit astonished at some of the replies I've had....but also think that it was understandable that I asked for advice, because we had got nowhere with the CAB yesterday - thats how confusing the benefit rules are.

That is not the reason you deleted it and there is no way you are going to pull the wool over our eyes ( with the odd exception). We read it properly and your intention was quite clear which has now been proved by you deleting it.
