Speeding Fines in Spain

A freind of mine has just received a speeding fine through the post from Spain, saying the speed cameras caught him on the motorway between Malaga & Gibraltar.

He was in Spain at that time, and made a few trips to Gibraltar, but cant remember going there on the day the ticket says (it is in Spanish, and we are assuming that is the date of the offence rather than the date the ticket was issued)

Has this happened to anyone else? any suggestions? if he 'leaves it - will it 'go-away' or will they try and get the UK police involved??

Any help / experiances would be appreciated.

There was a programme on last night about driving in Europe and according to a guy on it, if a fine doesn't get paid, there isn't anything that can be done about it.

  • do you know what the programme was or what channel? (maybe I could watch it again on BBC Player or 4OD?)

I didn't see it but I imagine it was Holiday Driving Hell: Tonight which was on at 8pm on ITV.

Many years ago whilst in Germany with RAF. I received a ticket in Holland, I stopped at the border and enquired what would happen if I failed to pay. The Border Police said that my reg No would be circulated to all border posts and I would be denied entry in future. As I entered Holland daily I decided to pay.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

  • i'd search the internet about scams as i'm sure that one was doing the rounds with regards to hire cars....if it's his own car well it's likely to be genuine.
btw in the back of my mind it may have been on the real hustle on bbc .....people were asked details as if they were entering a competition or similar.

Speeding tickets or parking tickets from around Continental Europe. Bin them !! They won't have access to your money the way it happens in the UK. With no border crossing any longer, it's safe travel right up to the black sea.

should have sold the car, and brought a different one, let someone else get the grief when they try and cross the border :rotfl: :rotfl:
Take every day as it comes!!
  • Thanks for all the advice - It was a hire car, which I did not mention, but he is going to get the thing translated - as it's all in Spanish (As you would expect) - any other thoughts welcome though!
