Hi Everyone,
My brother is looking for a new desktop computer. He likes the look of the Dell XPS One and I was just looking for some opinions on it - is it worth the price or a bit gimmicky? Thanks for any help.
Regards
Michelle

It's an attempt to make a PC look like an imac, with a price tag to match!
It really depends on what you're looking for. If you could live with a standard PC (i.e. with the motherboard/drives/general innards in a separate case rather than stuffed in behind the monitor) you could get a much better specced PC for about half the price.0 -
In the latest issue of Custom PC they compared building their own similar spec PC to a Dell XPS 630. The DIY one performed better and they built it for £277 cheaper..."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I'd have to agree. If he wants an all-in-one design like this, why doesn't he just get an iMac?0 -

I thought as much hence why I said "gimmicky" - I'm sure he could live with a regular PC if it was a better computer overall. He tends to just be drawn in by how good it looks on the outside as he's no expert on what's really a good spec computer. I just thought it was overly pricey when I looked at it but I'm not an expert either!
He basically needs a good quality computer that's fast for internet browsing, downloading music and playing the odd pc game - it doesn't need to be some special gaming computer though as he mostly uses his playstation for games. What would you suggest he look at instead? Thanks for the help.

He's never had or used an iMac before and, as far as I know, they're quite different to use from ordinary computers so I don't know if that would be the best idea for him:hello: :hello: :hello:0 -

That's very interesting. He's basically only been looking at the Dell website as he wants a reputable company - he's had bad luck with computers in the past. The last one he got was from Tiny (I think they're no longer around) and he had no end of problems with it before it finally conked out.

My comment about getting an iMac instead wasn't a joke...;)0

I didn't think it was a joke Marty! I was just questioning whether, as someone who has never used a Mac and isn't a computer buff type, my brother would take to having something that's got such a different way of operating?? I've never used one either - although I think they look great and would love to try it out - so I have no experience to draw on.
From looking at the XPS and the iMac though I can see what people mean about it basically being an iMac clone so he would be better with the original if he wanted that design. Thanks.

Well it would suit everything he'd want except for the "playing the odd game", (depending on the games obviously, but Macs aren't known for games really)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

If he's into Dell, then try the XPS 420, for about half the price of what you've originally listed (and an Imac)!!!
I'd say it was the superior option anyway, irrespective of price. It's much more future-proof.
PC's with ultra-small cases or with everything chucked into the screen casing like the XPS One are, hardware wise, basically laptops without the portability. As such, you lose a lot of the flexibility and upgradeability that you'd get with a standard PC, and £ for £ they just ain't as powerful, either.
EDIT: And as has already been mentioned, if he's looking to play games Mac really isn't an option.0
