No the heating has been switched off alltogether for the last few weeks.

Anyway thanks for the advice, I will keep an eye on the meter over the next few days and check for anything unusual. I will try to keep the heating off as often as possible over the next quarter, if the summer bill is low then its clearly a problem with my heating system.

Online DD tariffs are usually the cheapest.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

First quarter was around 15000 kwh but we had two family members living with us during that period and they were at home during the day so that was an unrealistic bill.

    Last quarter was 261 units - 8200kwh

Hi Chris, I think I have the solution. As you moved into a new house I presume you have a metric meter (measures cubic meters). From the post I have quoted it looks as if you are being billed as if you have an imperial meter (measure 100's of cubic feet).
One metric unit = approx 11 kwh, one imperial unit = approx 31.5kwh.
This means that the bills you have received are approx 3 times higher than they should be!!
Before you ring them, to check your meter type, metric one will have m3 somewhere on it, and imperial will have cu ft or cubic feet on it, good luck.

I had thought this may be an issue since my parents and I used pretty much exactly the same units last quarter except they are billed in cubic meters and we are billed in cubic feet. I will check the meter as soon as possible, does this kind of thing happen often? It seems a crazy thing to get wrong.

Sorry to hijack your thread chris but after reading I thought I would double check my own readings to see how accurate they were. My meter says CU Feet which after reading the post is Imperial? I have looked at my bill and it says total Metric Units used is 642.48 CU. Meters. Does this mean we are underpaying. Our DD are £51  We live in a 3 bed semi family of four 2 adults 2 tots

Chris, yes I think this happens quite a lot, but in your case being a new build they should know that a metric meter was fitted (unless the builder had some very very very very old stock!!)

JayJay, If you have an imperial meter they convert it to cubic metres by multiplying by 2.83 (together with another formula to convert it to kwh) so it may show on the bill as cu m. Although on my npower bill it does show as 100's cubic feet. But if they are billing you as a metric meter and you have imperial then yes you are underpaying by a factor of 3. However your DD of £51 does seem about right for your circumstances.

Thanks notbritishgas, I got pretty concerned so took a better look at my bill and have worked out based on 31.5 x 222 (units) comes out out 6993 so it looks like im ok and paying the correct price. Chris im paying standard energy @ 2.860 and discounted energy @ 2.020 if that helps to compare jay-jay

Thanks to all who offered advice, it turned out that EDF were billing us for a imperial meter when in fact it is a metric meter. I can now amend my DD to a more reasonable £30 and am due a refund of £400.

    Thanks!
