Hi he thinks it is his windows password, but not 100% sure.He is unable to get off the login page as there is no buttons for doing so and it looks like he wont be able to access the internet if he doesnt remember the password. As you can prob tell we are not pc tech savvy,so any help appreciated.0

You press F8 as you're booting up the laptop to access Safe Mode."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I guessing its Vista on there? its asking for a password reset disk or usb pen - ideally you should create one when you first get your computer (though that doesnt help you now).
Do you the administrator password?0 -

Yes it is windows vista, and have tried the f8 button and nothing happens. There is no start button on the page just the password box,ive tried putting in an admin password and user password, which is fine and seems to be accepted, but it still automatically goes to the password login page with the white box and arrow pointing right, this is the password my son has forgotten.0 -
ah right, does the first password box you mention appear very quickly after switching on the computer?0

yes it does and when i enter a new password it is accepted and then asks me to enter HDD password, which i then enter the same password as the first,it is also accepted, then it takes me to the white box with the word password in it and this is the forgotten password, and can go no further from this page.0 -
Right, I could be wrong, it sounds to me that your laptop has got a BIOS password on it. (The 1st password you have to enter.)
This then allows the computer to 'start', then after about 30 secs or whatever you get the vista background with the password that you are stuck on?
To get to safe mode you'll have to press F8 after the first password has been entered, you'll have to press it a few times to 'catch the correct place' to press it - if you know what I mean. You should then get to the safemode screen.
TBH i've not used vista that much and I trying to remember if you can get into the admin account, I think its disabled by default.
There are utilities that are available to use to 'crack' the password, we've used ophcrack on a server in work which went wrong.
