Mobile phone insurance effective from...

I have read through the cheap phone insurance stuff and got a quote but can't find anywhere when (as in how long after the policy starts) you can make a claim from?
My evil 2 year old just threw my phone in the washing up bowl full of water and I tried my best to save it but its dead! I was wondering if I could get insurance for it and then say it accidentally dropped in some water? Or would this look too suspicious???
My main problem is that I am with 3 and break my phone about once every 2 months! I can never find a cheap phone compatible with 3!
Please advise me on what to do!
