    The Pass Phrase is the network key.
    ensure you enter it as written including the case (I believe it's all upper case)
  • The exact phrase it is coming up with now is "windows tried a repair but the problem still exists. The wireless security sttings on this computer do not match the settings on skyxxxxx

    the passphrase will generate a key the key cannot generate a passphrase. probably best looking under the router for the user name and password and then reseting it and starting again
    using a note pad
  • I have got the user name and password ( I assume)

    It says ssid xxxxxxxxx
    network key xxxxxxxx

    Given the age of the router, it probably only offers WEP encryption; when you're setting up the wi-fi network on the acer, make sure that the encryption is set to WEP, not WPA or WPA2. You may have to play about selecting 64 or 128 bit keys and input what's on written on the router.

    NB I know there will now be peeps who post that WEP isn't secure yada yada, get over yourselves.
  • now the stupid question. I keep hitting the wireless icon and it gives me the menu saying disconnected but ti ownt give me the option to enter the nwtwork key after I hit connect. I have never used vista before so don't know my way around it.

    Try shutting down any software firewalls on the laptop, Asus usually have Norton and its carp(sic)
    Also log on to the router and make sure you are allowing the laptop to connect by its MAC code.

    sky routers come with

    wpa-psk/tkip encryption
    8 character hex password

    make sure you are using wpa-personal (security type), tkip (encryption type) on the laptop, and the password (and case) matches your card, and that should be it. See control panel, network and sharing, view status, wireless properties to get at the wireless properties.[/quote

    You diamond. Working like a dream.

    A massive thanks to everyone who has helped. I owe you all a huge favour
