It's actually not that expensive at the trade-counters such as PTS, Plumb Center or Grahams, it shouldn't be more than a fiver, but in DIY shops it's often at about £7 a tube set against the non-sanitary stuff at £3-£4. Dow Corning 785 is the one to ask for if in doubt, although PTS own brand 'Tradesave' is just as good.

Thanks a lot. This has really helped. Now back to looking at 'stuck to the wall' type baths which will be much cheaper.
  • No problem, just remember to try and keep the gap between bath and tile as narrow as possible, and if you're not experienced with a silicone gun then use masking tape along the bath edge and tiles to make a neat line, have a bowl of warm soapy water next to you and dip your finger in there periodically and then smooth along the seal in quick, light continuous strokes and it should smooth down nicely. When you take the tape off have a bag handy as it can be messy, then you may have to lightly smooth down the ridges caused by removing the tape in the same way as above. Also, although this may seem like stating the obvious, get white silicone and not clear! In terms of long-term maintenance it should be fine as long as you're not too heavy-handed with cleaning, disturbing the edges.

I find the sealant wipes you can now get in DIY stores a great help for applying sealant without too much mess, and with acceptable results.

Also, to prevent mould and limescale on tiles / taps / glass screens, I found that a quick wipe with a microfibre cloth after every shower / bath works absolutely great. Takes a bit of disciplining yourself (and your housemates!) to do this every time, but it only takes a few seconds, and the continued good looks of your bath/shower are more than rewarding.
  • You can indeed do this and you do have a circular shower curtain. I found a picture online at bathroomexpress.co.uk. Its in the baths, baths without whirlpools, clearwate collection free standing and is called angel - the link is below

The only thing I would say is that I stayed in a hotel with one of these once - looked amazing but when you use the shower the shower curtain seems to close in on you - it must be something to do with the pressure created by the hot steam - its weird - maybe you just need a heavier shower curtain.

    Hope this helps

This link is incorrect, does anyone have the correct one? I'm also wanting to have a shower with a freestanding bath, I've been told it isn't possible ....
  • Hi all,

Sorry for resurecting the past - but am in need of a shower system for a free standing bath - anyone have any ideas or links?

I've stayed in a few hotels where they have had a free standing bath with a U-shaped shower screen (behind taps and up sides) but can't seem to find them anywhere...

    Many thanks,

    HH.

Bathstore now have freestanding 'shower baths', which I think must be a new thing, only just noticed them on their website! :)
