Decent cheap broadband

Options
I'm moving house next week and need a broadband provider. I do use bittorrent quite a bit, but not a ridiculous amount and I'm currently using demon, which is good but pricey.
I'm looking for a provider which will preferably let me use bittorrent a little, but I'm on a budget. I've looked at tiscali which is cheap but I've heard very mixed things regarding torrents to say the least.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Does tiscali completely block torrent ports, as a friend of mine told me, or will they let me use it within reason?

  • i recently joined o2, very happy...far as i know no probs with torrents or throttling etc...

its fast, cheaper than tiscali (after 3 months), especially with o2 mobile, and if you check the polls their rated among the best providers...

Which Demon rate you on? the 22.99p/m(Home office) or the 17.99p/m (Home) rate?

I'm on Demon Home 8000 (£17.99) and it's the best (on par with ZEN) no throttling and a nice lax 40Gb a month usage (friendly warning if you go over it by 25%).

I'd not trade their service with any of the big ones like Tiscali, O2, BT or Virgin!

I forgot to mention, can't get o2 or talktalk free broadband or anything like that in our area, but thanks for the advice.
I'm on demon home 8000 and I quite agree with you solitaire. I've never even been warned. Someone told me once when I called up that its 50gb, but 'we're very lax about enforcing it' so much the same experience there.
On another note, although there's no point now as I'm moving, I called demon cancellations up recently and asked if they could make it cheaper as I was thinking of leaving. They then emailed me forms to sign for a new 12 month contract at £15.49 per month, so it might be worth you trying that if you're out of contract. It did seem a little hit and miss though; I called up once and was offered it, then I called again to take it up and the guy knew nothing about it until he asked his supervisor.

Entanet (adsl24, Vivaciti, UKFSN etc) £20/month, 30gb peak (mon-fri 8am-10pm) 300GB offpeak, no shaping or port blocking, torrents work fine (around 650-700kbs here usually). 1 month contracts!
