changing IP address

Hi im with virgin media broadband, and im pretty sure that my IP ADDRESS is fixed? so even when i turn my router off and on, i still get the same IP ADDRESS everytime?

is this correct?

how do i go about changing my IP? i dont want to use proxy sites (unless anybody has a really good one?!) as most of them dont load up all pages, are slow to load and generally encounter problems with most well known websites etc

so how do i get a different IP ADDRESS?

are there other broadband providers that dont use a fixed IP ADDRESS? ive heard of some people, simply switching the router on and off and after 5 mins they get a different IP ADDRESS

so what are my options? i dont mind paying for two broadband subscriptions/connections...if i have too, but only if i got it for a good price...

thanks

If you have a wireless then probaly is correct.

The router will create it's own little network and assign IP addresses, if you have one PC then you will more than likely get the same IP address.

However this will be different to the IP address that is broadcast across the net.

You are probably worrying over nothing

For what legitimate reason do you need to keep changing your IP address?

I have been using a static IP for about a year now and have never had any problems.

If your IP is static, aside from using a proxy, I don't really think there's much you can do. I can't think of a valid reason to worry about this though, so I'd be intrigued to hear more.

Lots of ISPs actually charge extra for a static IP, so I don't really see what you're complaining about.

EDIT: I've had a look, and it appears that your IP is sticky rather than static. There is theoretically a way to change it.

    thanks for the replies

i have one computer, and i dont have a wireless router

the reason i want to change my IP address is that there are certain website bonus offers i have used, that my family members also want to use, but the offers are limited to one person per household and per IP address....

im not trying to commit fraud as my cousin doenst even live with me, but hasnt got access to a pc, so she cant use these sites at all, which i think is unfair as id only be doing her a favour by purchasing on her behalf...

she has her own credit card, a different address and a different surname, but the only thing that means she cant get discounts and bonus's is the fact that she needs me to purchase things from my computer but as said before its not possible...

MARTY J: How did you have a look at my IP? lol how do you know its sticky and not static?

    thanks for your help

Possibly the easiest solution is for her to go to the local library and use the internet access there - many now do half an hour free for people living in the area.

You probably don't have a fixed IP address, but some ISPs assign IP addresses on a long "lease". Try turning the router off overnight, as that works for some providers. Not very handy if you want to change often though!

Well as far as I can make out, your IP address will stay the same as long as the device you use to connect to the internet has the same MAC. So in order to change your IP, you'd have to use a different modem, or change the MAC of your existing modem.

This would all be pretty unwieldily to do on a regular basis, so I'm afraid your best bet is probably a proxy I'm afraid. Or perhaps your cousin could use the computers in the local library or internet café.

It would seem a bit much to take out another broadband subscription so your cousin can enter competitions though. You're quite a generous fellow.

VM personal IP addresses aren't static....but it does pretty much stay the same.
You can Start>Run>Command> ipconfig/release...then switch your modem off overnight and see if it changes tomorrow...but it might not....I went away for 3 weeks once and got the same one back.

Or, use a different NIC or router, that will change it.

    edit
(or if you're connected by ethernet, try the USB connection instead)

If you're with Virgin the only way to really change your IP address is to leave your cable modem unplugged for 24hours and it might give you a new one

Nope, im with virgin too and my IP address hasn't changed since I got it installed 18 months ago. (was telewest then).

The only way to change your external IP address is to give them a call and ask for a static one. They may charge you for it, they may not even be able to do it (they might have to configure settings and they probably wont do that just for 1 customer).

Call them, see what they say/

I didn't look up your IP specifically. I just did some reading about Virgin Media IPs in general. In short, it won't change while you're using the same equipment to connect to the internet.
