Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: Sorry, I'm going to move this post back to the Charity board and merge it with your original post, as it has been posted elsewhere and that’s one of the site’s rules (please see this rule). I have had breast cancer, but was very luck, just on 6 years now, and when I have the opportunity I try and contribute to any fundraising for breast cancer and would love to do so for particular person I 'know' rather than perhaps an organisation
I make soap, it was a hobby and is now turning into a little business. For my local cancer unit who treated me, I make little handmade goats milk soaps, round, white and with the pink ribbon emblem on the top, and they sell them for £1 each and they are very popular. When you have radiotherapy, which I am sure she will have after the chemo, your skin can be a bit sensitive and sore and you are not meant to use any perfumed and fragranced stuff, these are unfragranced and the goats milk seems to be soothing. I would love to send you some, free of course, and perhaps you could sell them and your aunt may find them useful as well. I make other things including lovely body butter made out of cocoa and shea butter and an unfragranced one of those would be good during the radiotherapy to keep the skin moisturised.
I was lucky I only had radiotherapy which is nothing to worry about, I did not need chemo. Why is your uncle giving up his job and not just having time off? it really is not that bad the fear of it all is the worst part when someone says that word to you, your aunt will need some help be it is suprising how quickly you get better. My friend had chemo, a session every 3 weeks and in between she went into work for a few hours some of the days and felt a lot better for it, keeping busy with no time to worry.
I have been to Eurodisney twice and this would be a brilliant treat for the family when this is all over.
Sometimes you just read something and feel part of it straight away. If you want to PM and we will sort this out
I was also surprised that the husband felt the need to give up work as many people who've had a mastectomy can themselves be back at work within weeks, even with chemotherapy. In that case, I agree that Eurodisney would be a good trip for soon afterwards. It was the fact of his giving up work that made me wonder if the aunt had been told that her case was particularly serious and going to need long term intensive care, which led to my comment about Eurodisney's unsuitability.
I think that your idea of soap is lovely.0 -
Thank you for the replies -particularly loretta - thank you for the lovely offer, I will pm you.
I was obviously thinking of the trip for when she has recovered - she's been told she'll need 24 (I think) weeks of chemo. The fact they they have 2 boys with ADHD is part of the reason why my uncle needs to be at home - they're very difficult boys and will not 'behave' or leave her alone when she needs to rest. You may be right though - at the moment she's panicking and thinking worst case, worrying about coping with the children and I dont know enough about it to put her right.
I know its not as 'worthy' a cause as a child with an illness - but they're not well off even with my uncle working and have only had one holiday since my oldsest cousin was born and she's 12. She was on the phone in tears to me yesterday and I just feel that she needs something to look forward to at the end of all this.
I'll have to think carefully - I dont want people to think badly of me and resent sponsoring. I may end up saving up and paying for the trip myself. It'll just take a while.
Thank you so much for all your comments - I'll have to have a good think about it as I'm unsure.MANAGED TO CLEAR A 3K OVERDRAFT IN ONE FRUGAL, SUPER CHARGED MONEY EARNING MONTH!:j

Can I just comment on mspig's post - I am not sure why you were told you needed to register as a charity in order to fundraise for this cause. In fact, one cannot register a charity which benefits only one person (as the McCanns found out). If you are fundraising for one person, you can do so as long as you do not describe the cause as 'charitable'. Be open and clear about what the money is going to, what will happen to any excess funds raised and keep it all in a separate bank account, giving anyone who asks an account of how the money was spent.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0
