Hi there - I'd be grateful if anyone can help me with advice.

My auntie has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has to has a mastectomy followed by chemo. They had been planning a eurodisney trip with their 3 kids but as my uncle is having to give up his job to care for her and the kids this will be cancelled.

I'd love to fund raise to pay for this trip but wasnt sure if you need special permission or a license or anything. My husband has offered to do a week of 'hell' which would include things like 24 hr fast and back/sack/crack wax etc and people would hopefully sponsor.

Any ideas/advice?

Many thanks

  • I guess if you tell people exactly what you are raising for and where the money will go and what for, you can do what you like. I know that around here a LOT of "charity" stalls set up at the local car boot and have signs up saying what they are raising for. Maybe your DH could dress up in a red G-string and an apron to man the stall bright and early on the Sunday morning of his week of hell...?

    good luck....your poor hubby! LMAO!

Hi all - have posted on the charity board but theres not much action over there so thought I'd try here - hope thats ok.

My aunt has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has to have a mastectomy and chemo. They were planning a trip to eurodisney but as my uncle is having to give up his job to look after her and the kids it isnt going to happen.

I'd love to raise money for this trip - but am unsure of the rules or any special permissions I might need as its not an official charity.

My husband has offered to do a sponsored 'week of hell', bless him - to include things like a 24 hour fast, no nookie for a week, no car for a week and a back sack and crack wax .

I'm also a bit worried that my aunt might see it as begging and take offence. I dont think she would but it is a worry. Would anyone else see it like that? I'd love to be able to pay for the trip in full myself but we could only manage about half the £900 cost, so this is why we're trying to think up other ways.

    Thanks all
I've never done anything like this before and any advice/ideas are most welcome.

Have a look on the internet to see if there is a charity that you would like to raise money for (I guess a breast cancer one?). Contact them to see if they have advice for fundraisers. Quite often, they will know what you can and can't do and may even be able to help with sponsor forms, etc.

I am involved with a national charity and we have a fundraisers pack for people who want to raise money for the charity.

edit: have just spotted you want to raise money to pay for a eurodisney trip so this advice might be any good after all. :(

    hey,
i wouldnt be 100% sure, but i imagine as long as your not pretending its for a charity its fine to fundraise whoever u want :) Just make sure people are clear what its for (Which I am sure you would have anyway). Good luck!

technically, you can fundraise for anything, as long as you make sure absolutely everyone knows what you're fundraisng for. So GIB's beer fund is allowed, as long as you know I want you to pay for my beers.

The problem for you is that if you vaguely mention eurodisney trip, or breast cancer, then people may misinterpret it, so you'd need to make it very clear.

For this kind of thing, your local communities would be best - they're usually happy enough to help someone who neds it regardless of it being a 'registered charity' or not.

Might sugest contacting a breast cancer charity too, to see if there are any funds to help with this kind of thing. It's possible.

    Hope it's a help.

My mum held a charity night to try and raise funds for my nephew a few years ago, he had leukemia and needed a big buggy as he was very large due to the steroids, anyhow she had to get a registered charity number to do it, not sure how she got one though just know she had one.

If your aunt is so ill that your uncle has to give up work to look after her, a trip to Eurodisney may no longer be suitable. It can be quite a energetic holiday and it could be better to wait and see how she is after a couple of months of recovery.

I would have been very offended if someone had done this for me when I had a mastectomy but you know your aunt and this may not be the way she will react. You might also find that people are unwilling to contribute; it's hardly the same as a child with a terminal illness being funded to swim with dolphins!

I know I've been negative about this and I'm sure you mean well but personally I don't think this is a terribly good idea. Sorry.

I have had breast cancer, but was very luck, just on 6 years now, and when I have the opportunity I try and contribute to any fundraising for breast cancer and would love to do so for particular person I 'know' rather than perhaps an organisation

I make soap, it was a hobby and is now turning into a little business. For my local cancer unit who treated me, I make little handmade goats milk soaps, round, white and with the pink ribbon emblem on the top, and they sell them for £1 each and they are very popular. When you have radiotherapy, which I am sure she will have after the chemo, your skin can be a bit sensitive and sore and you are not meant to use any perfumed and fragranced stuff, these are unfragranced and the goats milk seems to be soothing. I would love to send you some, free of course, and perhaps you could sell them and your aunt may find them useful as well. I make other things including lovely body butter made out of cocoa and shea butter and an unfragranced one of those would be good during the radiotherapy to keep the skin moisturised.

I was lucky I only had radiotherapy which is nothing to worry about, I did not need chemo. Why is your uncle giving up his job and not just having time off? it really is not that bad the fear of it all is the worst part when someone says that word to you, your aunt will need some help be it is suprising how quickly you get better. My friend had chemo, a session every 3 weeks and in between she went into work for a few hours some of the days and felt a lot better for it, keeping busy with no time to worry.

I have been to Eurodisney twice and this would be a brilliant treat for the family when this is all over.
