Private Villa Holiday - Insurance

Hello - I will be renting a private villa in the Canary Islands direct from the Owner and they have asked for details of our holiday insurace - namely: name of insurer, policy number and names of persons covered. I have booked privately before and never had to provide this information. Don't really have a problem with supplying the details, but was just interested to know if other people have been asked for this when booking holiday accommodation privately? Many thanks.

hi there - never in 10 years of booking villas have I been asked for this information. Like you I can't see that they would be able to do something untoward with the information but I can't see why they'd need it. Would they maybe think it would cover them if you decided to trash the place?0

Hi - as an owner of several properties in the Canary Islands and a company who rents out on behalf of a number of other owners throughout the world, we have never asked for clients insurance details. We simply ask that the clients have the relevant insurance that will cover them in case of emergencies.
We do take a breakages deposit for each of our villas based on the size and furnishing which is to cover larger breakages but each of the properties also has its own insurance in case of any severe damage to a property. We also ask for the lead party member’s passport number but this is for our own public liability cover.
As melb says I am sure there is nothing untoward going on but I would like to know why they are asking for it before providing the details.
Best of luck0 -
Hello - the owners have replied as follows:
"If you do not have travel insurance and you have an accident on our premises, your only recourse is to sue us personally. We would be able to reclaim against our insurance company as we have full public liability insurance, but would have all the inconvenience and stress of having to deal directly with your solicitors. We do not need a copy - just name of insurer and policy number."

We have never been asked either, and I don't understand what the reply means. unless they are saying that if you don't have travel insurance they are not prepared to rent to you?0
