Unsure what to do.

My computer system is dated. It is windows'98. Of late I've been wondering if the time has come to a newer system. I've seen for about £350, Tesco have a complete package and recently Dell are offering systems for less than £300. On paper, everything seems fine, but we don't live in a perfect world and I'm wondering what procedure I'd follow when I needed help.

Actually, I suppose I've answered my own question. My current system was put together by an "independent" and on the two occassions when help was needed, I returned to item for repair and on the second, they came to me.

So, I suppose I ought to see them and ask if they could "match" the big boys.

those cheap systems are all "on board"....graphics sound etc are all built into the motherboard and steal Ram from the 256Mb or whatever you start off with. ok for basic word processing and surfing but no good for gaming

    I'm with you....Mr local shop ;)

you can always upgrade yourself. I bought a basic Dell system but added my own graphics card and sound card and DVD rewriter. Total cost of upgrade was approx £70.

  • Recommend you go to the local man every time. On the rare occasions when I have needed expert help they sorted it within a day or two. Much faster than getting someone at the end of a phone to do it. Had a puter from Holly, returned it for repair(alledgedly quicker than getting their engineer out) waited for 6 weeks and rec'd back not repaired. Luckier than some as they went out of business 1 week later.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Not only have I taken on board your comments, I've spent a great deal of thime "thinking". When I say I have little or no technical knowledge, that sums it up. I think that were a problem arise, I'd feel more at ease, explaining to the guy that had built up the system than a multiple store. I'll let you know what I decide.

  • I have used the same "local" guy for years and have upgraded various bits when necessary and he is always on the end of the phone if needed.

A good local shop should build to your specification and won't be offended if you keep say your existing keyboard or monitor etc.

I got mine signed up to MSE and gave him a car sticker to promote the site as well. We have a great working relationship and occasional "trade" an upgrade.

He was looking for a microwave so that paid for a new graphics card when daughter upgraded to Sims2 icon12.gif
