Campervan / Motorhome Rental Excess Insurance

Hi,

I'm making a trip to New Zealand in October and renting a campervan for the full 25 days of my trip. My rental includes insurance, but has a NZ$5000 excess payable upfront for any damage to the vehicle. I can opt to pay an additional NZ$20 a day to reduce this to NZ$1250, or NZ$32 a day to have zero excess, but this does add up to a significant sum given the length of time I'm renting the vehicle for. (NZ$ curently about 2.6 to the £).

I've found endless cheap policies insuring excess liability for rental cars worldwide, but they all specifically exclude cover for campers/motorhomes. Does anyone know of any insurers that would cover me for this for a reasonable cost?

Any help would be much apreciated!

  • I found a great site for booking my campervan trip in New Zealand. Its called Find A Camper. It has really cheap rental rates. Many were cheaper than what you can find if you go direct to the rental companies themselves.

On the insurance side of things, I would get the extra insurance. We had a smash and did not have any additional insurance and had to pay quite a bit.

Any way the link for Findacamper is http://www.findacamper.co.nz
  • Thanks for the reply paddyrick,

I probably should clarify that I've already booked the camper (and got a great deal :-)

Insurance wise - I'm don't intend to leave myself exposed to a NZ$5,000 excess so was really asking if anyone else knows of cheaper insurance options other than the paying the rental company direct on a daily rate?

I'm in the same position, looking for CDW excess cover for a campervan hire in Italy. It's easy to get cover for car hire insurance excess, but campervans invariably seem to be excluded. And with an excess of 4,000 euros, you definitely need the cover!

Does anyone know of any company which offers this cover in Europe?

I have been phoning around as we are looking for excess insurance on a camper van and no joy. It is because of being able to cook in a camper van which causes more hazaards. So if you find a solution do let me know and I will do likewise. We are going in November for 6 weeks.

I too have been looking for excess waiver insurance for my camper van trip to NZ in October. Through one rental site I am considering they suggest taking travel insurance which covers rental excess and there is a link to a site called "comprehensive travel insurance". Entering details into this gives a quote of approx £146 for 6 weeks cover for 2 people which includes vehicle rental excess insurance of 4000 NZ dollars. I dont know whether this would cover all the things that might happen (i.e. accident, theft, tyres etc), but might be worth considering and also provides general travel insurance. I haven't found any UK policies that provide this sort of cover. The link for this site is: https:/ctisales.co.nz/policymatrix.aspxt

  • A bump on this thread from me.

We have an RV booked for Las Vegas to San Francisco, the insurance excess is $2500 which basically means any accident apart from a total write off will cost me a fair bit.

Like the others, I am looking for a company that will cover at least part of that excess.

Normally you can pay a bit more - well quite a bit more actually to insure the excess. You have to ask yourself - "Do you feel lucky?" as Clint Eastwood would say
