American Airlines advise

I have read every thread regarding the AA computer and have been searching for flights for over two days .I have never travelled making one or more stop before .but as I want to go in Aug and all other flights are expensive thought I would give it a go .I will be travelling with mum 85 and d/d 16 mum gets assistance at airports and usually immigration goes smooth because of her getting a wheelchair .I would like to know from you experts my best way to travel .
We will leave by Man and arrive in Florida not too bothered where if its cheaper ,preference Orlando ,tampa.Dates from 18 August (cheaper then) 1st September return.Would I be better getting a flight to jfk and an internal flight to florida ,or just book all with AA also dont mind a day or two stop over in New york if it can be done just need some advice also how long to leave between flights as I will not be able to rush if I am pushing a wheelchair and luggage.Any advice a bonus thanks.Dont usually penny pinch but are going at Xmas +acruise so this is an extra.

please think carefully about what you put an 85 year old through! if you are going to do a stop it might be nice to get an airport hotel and leave mum to get some rest

I dont mind getting an hotel to brake the journey ,mum travels better than me ,its me that will need a rest ,she did all the parks last year and a cruise at Xmas more stamina than all of us.
  • You will need at least 2 hours to change flights in the USA - you need to go through Immigration (which can be very slow) and then you need to collect your bags and go through Customs. Once you have cleared Customs you have to take your bags to your airlines' transit area and only then will your luggage be sent to catch your flight. Also bear in mind you may have to go through security again, which can also add to the time you need for changing planes.

So while I say AT LEAST 2 hours, you would be far less stressed if you had twice that much time.
  • You will find americanairlines.co.uk can be cheaper than aa.com for the same flight!

2 hours should be fine - some airports are better than others in the USA :)

If the OP is flying from Manchester, then the only US destination is Chicago -- in which case, I'd be a LOT happier with a 2 and a half our transfer than a 2 hour.

I'm interested in your comment on americanairlines.co.uk vs aa.com -- as I've always found them to be priced identically.

I went through both links and kept getting different prices, was wondering if we could break the journey and have an overnight somewhere,we are not taking much luggage, dont need the hassle, clothes are cheap to buy if we run short.
Regards prices as you have said before keep checking until you get one you are happy with.
One small point when I was filling in country it had US US and others UK,when I clicked on US and all others the price seemed to be cheaper in $ than clicking UK,I am still working on it hope to finalise anytime.

American airports are such a pain that I would try to use only one not two. As cheap_charlie says you need to get your bags and clear immigration and customs at your first airport in the US and then check the bags back in again for the next leg. I would do anything I can to avoid that and I'm nowhere near 85.

Edit: American Airlines is the only one that's not asking criminal prices, so I guess you don't have a lot of choice.
