I served with the Brigade of Gurkhas from September 1969 to May 1981 (12 years), and I voluntarily resigned. I have now learned that I am entitled to a preserved pension but don't know where and how I can confirm this, and what I need to do to claim? I would be very grateful for any advice on this please.

    Ring JPA helpline.

0141 2243600 - you will need your sevice number (like you will ever forget and your NI number!)

Thank you for your kind helpful reply. I have received an application form from the JPA office, which was e-mailed to me. I shall post update of how I get on.
  • UPDATE:

Good morning all. I have received a reply (reproduced below) to my application and would appreciate further information about the rules for preserved pension for Gurkhas please.

    "PENSION FORM AFPS 8
    21159640 EX-SGT SWAROOP KUMAR RAI

    Mr. Charmling,

I can find no trace of you on our pension system and can only assume that you are not currently in receipt of a pension from us. If this is the case then you are not entitled to an AFPS pension as you have failed to serve for 15 years and therefore the form is returned to you.

Should you have any injury sustained whilst serving you may be entitled to a War Pension from SVPA Norcross . If this is the case you should write to the address at the bottom of this letter.

Should you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us.

    Desk Officer
    Gurkha Pensions"

According to this information e-mailed to me, I should be entitled to a preserved pension: "As far as a preserved pension goes then, as you were serving on or after 6 Apr 75, were age 26 or more on discharge and had 5 years or more service over the age of 18, you should meet all the criteria to qualify and be awarded a preserved pension based on some12/13 years pensionable service. This will be payable from age 60."

All help and information on how to rightfully claim this pension will be appreciated very much.

    Gurkhaman Swaroop,

I have nothing really to add to the thread, apart from the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 1975 (AFPS 75) link in blue below.

    AFPS 75

This is the link to the MOD site, where you can find all the information yuou require. If you are unhappy to click links, then you can find this by putting AFPS 75 into google, and the first link with 'www . mod . uk / defense' is the one you require.

There are 2 pension schemes running at the moment, AFPS 75 which was created as of the Social Security Act 1973, and the APFS (20)05 which was a review due to the 75 being outdated.

Let us know how you get on,

    Regards,

Thank you for your kind and helpful reply, much appreciated. I have bookmarked the MOD site for later, and for reference in the future. However, the site does not seem to have relevant information regarding Gurkhas Preserved Pension, which I understand is a separate scheme and I should appreciate it if there is anyone who can point me in the right direction.
