Armed Forces Pension

Options
I know this technically belongs in the Pensions forum but thought I would get a better response here.

I joined the Services earlier this year and am 22 on a Permanent Commission signed up until my 40th Birthday or longer. I recently received information on the Armed Forces Stakeholder Pension with Scottish Widows and was wondering if people would recommend it? I am of course on the new 2005 onwards pension scheme.

I already save into and ISA and investment funds but is it worth joining the Pension Scheme and topping up what I would already get on retirement/at age 55 or should I go down a different, perhaps private pension route?

I think you would need INDEPENDENT financial advice tbh. I would find a decent IFA and take it from there. Where to save for your pension is one of the most important decisions you can make, and making the wrong one would be bad news!

    Ditto above

  • Angry Dave, try looking at the Forces Pension society. http://www.forpen.org/

OK, it's £23 a year but they have pensions experts that will give advice for free as long as you are a member.

These are the people that do the pensions breifs at the resettlement centres so you know that they're not going to give you duff gen.
Trying to only spend money when I absolutely have to.
Barclaycard: £4559-1500 = £3059 (Will have £900 to add to that end of September)

  • I served with the Brigade of Gurkhas from September 1969 to May 1981 (12 years), and I voluntarily resigned. I have now learned that I am entitled to a preserved pension but don't know where and how I can confirm this, and what I need to do to claim? I would be very grateful for any advice on this please.

I'm sure if you contact them, they will put you through to the correct department.

    Good luck :)
