Hi
We bought a Y reg Ford Galaxy last March from a dealership. We also bought a warantee which is pretty burluddy useless.
Several (expensive) things have gone wrong in the short time which we have had the car and we can never claim on the warantee cos they always say whatever has gone wrong is not covered.
Now the windscreen wipers have packed up (some box thing has seized). Not covered by warantee. £92.00 just to tell us what is up, but if its what the garage thinks it is its going to cost 'a couple of hundred quid'.
I am so fed up with the car. I feel as if I just want rid of it.
We bought the car using finance over 4 years (About £7,800 - don't know if its HP or a loan. Have been paying since April 2007) and I don't suppose that we would get enough to cover the finance. We could afford to put some money to the loan but this would mean using all of our savings (We have got about £3,500). I would then need to see about getting another car - although we could now cope with something smaller.
Has anyone got any words of advice or thoughts on what we should/could do? I have been thinking about this so much my head hurts and I just feel totally defeated!
Thanks in advance

Unfortunately the wipers are a weak spot on these cars and yes the dealer price to repair would be into the several hundreds, but as far as I can reember there is the linkage and mechanism which can be sorted individually which a main dealer wont do, they'll just replace the lot. Get yourself to a decent independent garage, phone a few scrapyards and ask if they have the part, should be able to cut the cost down a lot doing it that way0

The wiper linkages are a problem, to such an extent I wouldnt bother fitting used and get genuine parts for this, but as said - an independant garage will save you a fortune here. When you go over bumps is there a rattling from the wiper base area?Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

Hi - Thanks so much for your replies.
I have not noticed any rattling at all TBH. The wipers just started juddering whilst wiping and then they stopped. Then started. Then stopped. You get the picture.
Interestingly, this was only happening whilst going forwards - when I was reversing onto my drive they were working. (Perhaps I should have reversed the 17 miles home from work). They were also working this morning, although still juddery.0 -

It appears that the finance was through the dealership - yes?
That being the case then the Finance company is jointly responsible for the satisfactory quality of the car under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
Have you saved details of all of the issues together with dates and costs etc?
Have you sent a letter of complaint about the vehicle to the supplying dealer?
If not and you have saved all of the details write a letter of complaint with a diary of what happened, when and what cost to put it right.
Send a copy direct to the Finance Company with a copy to the Dealer and save a copy for yourself.
The Finance company will then investigate your complaint and hopefully suggest a resolution?
Good Luck0 -
Hi,
If I were you, I would fix the wipers and keep the car because it seems to me it would cost too much to replace it. Out of interest, what were the faults that you have encountered with the car over the past 15 months?Be nice, life is too short to be anything else.0 -
I'd be asking what you can claim on the warranty exactly :rolleyes:0
-
i would be canceling that warranty right away.
to be totally honest i think the dealer has saw you coming,£7800 for a y reg galaxy seems a bit much to me.
im guessing you have always taken it back to the main dealer for the repairs to be carried out?
as thunderbird has asked wht other horrendous faults have you had?...work permit granted!0 -

You don’t say whether it’s a petrol or diesel and how much you are paying per month I would guess from what you have said that it would be approx £200 per month, you would probably still owe £7Kish with the car being worth (if assuming diesel and 80000 miles) circa £4000, leaving a shortfall of £3,000, so if you put your savings in to clear what you have currently, I would suggest that you start again with a manufacturer warranty of at least 2 years (they are much more comprehensive than the worthless one you have which covers nothing) Assuming you can afford the current payments I would go on t'internet and research some cars that you a.) like the look of and b.) are what you need in your latest criteria i.e. size, number of doors, engine size, diesel/petrol, running costs etc. when you have narrowed your search down, approach the dealers you have chosen and ask what finance deals or special offers they have at present (and believe me they are desperate to 'move metal' at present so there are some great deals with very small deposits and low APRs 6.5% for instance, all in all it may not be as disastrous as you may think as there is lots of choice and any dealer you visit will bend over backwards to look after you and ensure that you get a good deal.

Regarding the previous post, what's the point in losing £3K and then buying another car with even more depreciaton losses tied in. Even if you spend £2K fixing this one you'll have spent less money.
Dealers purchase warranties like an insurance policy. They're usually pretty cheap, hence why it doesn't cover much.
Can you list the faults here?
The best way forwards is to find a decent independant garage and get honest opinions on any faults.Happy chappy0 -
