Crikey....I'm 29...I'm just learning to accept the alterations to life plan so far, you're implying this is going to happen again? :rolleyes:0 -
Fantastic. In Life Plan J; I pay off the mortgage, last kid educated and I'm off to Vietnam to assist in their developing / growing textile + garment manufacturing industry....seeing ours is down the pan.We also have a friend who's spent the last few years working for free in African villages, so what have we 'sacrificed' by comparison?0 -
Looks like it was a good thing I went out today.... I was a civil servant in Whitehall for about a year, but I was totally unsuited to the job. I think it dawned on me after a month or so that I'd made a huge error, but the Civil Service Commission probably worked that out even sooner!0

OH has to keep me content as well, it's not a one-way street chez NDG :T...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

The problem is, as I see it, there always is boom and bust. Does it have to be that way???? So life time planning is pretty impossible. I do have friends that have been in business for years and somehow ride throuigh the tough times.
On the other hand, many I know right now are throwing in the towel. One buddy after 25 years of low oveer head trading.
Things always change. I was sales director for a small importer in the early 80`s selling a fantastis USA product. We based our costs on, I think $1.90 to the pound. At one point just £1 bought $2.40. Terrific position to be in and we passed some of the gains on as customer incentives.
Over a period the pound dropped to an alarming $1.50 as I recall. We had to post price rise after price rise. Demand dropped. We had to shed staff and in the end we were absorbed by the manufactuer whose good we were importing.
Our 5 year plan was smashed. I could go on about other situations I have experienced due to the way our economy is based on feast and famine.

Babies, recessions, changing times....all muck up The plan.
My age is danger age.
I have known of model hubbies of 20 yrs suddenly run off with totty half their age, perfect children turn into monster, young adults, ones trade or profession tipped upside down by 'Progress' or other factors out of ones control........of course, OH won't run off with totty (I lock him in the cupboard during his leisure time....not reeeaaly), and my young adult offspring are perfect angels.
BTW Was chit chatting with a regular customer today who has just joined the Bar about 'Tescos Law' coming in for the legal profession? Don't you legals worry about this impact in 2 decades time?
She was talking about tha fact it won't affect the quality work but the drudgy type work pays the basics....if that is filched by big companies, the economics of a Law practice may not add up anymore?
I have a feeling that those in Law now who are in their 20's may feel the effects of this during their 40's.0 -

No, I don't worry about it. For a start, there's nothing I can do about it, so there's no point worrying.
I do a very specialist area of law - mostly High Court and Appellate Immigration.
In addition I'm self-employed, barristers don't have high overheads :T...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Oh Davesnave, I think you are spot on with your comment about being one of the plan and wait generation. We are also two of them.
Our plan was to sell and downsize to give part of our pension. The changes in dh's company pension schemes have knocked £2000+ a year off his pension. This meant the sale was vital.
For the past three years I've been worried about the economy. I kept saying to anyone who would listen that the borrowing that sustained our 'miracle' economy couldn't continue indefinitely - but it seemed to do so.
Last year I was watching Right Move and two houses for sale in my road. One the same design as mine and the other not far off. It took one a long time to sell and the other was taken off the market. I said we should get our house done up ready for the market this February. Dh was very resistant but did it to humour me. I realised the market was freezing fast and after five weeks reduced the price to what my neighbours sold the previous August and it sold very quickly. Our great conveyancers got it through in four weeks as there was no chain.
So lifeplan, it is difficult not to have some kind of plan. We all need somewhere to live. If we have children it introduces a new dynamic to the plan. However, now the plan is to buy our bungalow in 'Old Farts On Sea' and spend the time sailing and travelling.0 -
What sort of sailing do you do?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
