Stop BT Contract early and switch to Sky - Possible???

Hey guys,
I'm sick of being stuffed by BT every month so I would really appreciate some advice.
I moved into a rented property in Feb and started a new BT line contract with £17.99 per month Broadband. I was told by a few different BT staff that I could not open the new contract and then switch to Tiscali/Sky straight away without paying my full 12 month contract with BT upfront... so I was forced to use BT broadband.
BT tell me I need to keep the contract for at least 12 months until I can change broadband supplier without any charge.
I would really like a sky package (TV/Phone/Broadband) since it's cheaper than what I'm paying BT for Broadband + Line Rental...
Is there any way I can get out of the BT contract(s) and switch Broadband and/or Phone Line rental supplier to Sky?
I would really appreciate your advice on this - BT are gangsters and I'm sick of paying them a fortune.
Thanks in advance...

You can leave a BT contract at any time by giving them notice and paying any early termination fees.0

Yep pay em the money you agreed to pay them for the minimum contract period and I am sure they will be happy to release you early.0

Hardly the 'money saving' attitude!! Am I the only one that thinks BT are gangsters??? Why would I pay the full contract off then start paying for broadband from another company - that's just crazy!
I need to get out of the contract (that I didn't want in the first place, but was forced to have - otherwise, no internet) without paying!
Is it possible to end the BT contract early and/or switch to another broadband supplier?
Thanks again0 -

Theres a difference between saving money & not paying money.
You've agreed to the contract, so either honour it or pay it off. Theres not a lot else to it.
Just be careful what you agree to in the future.0 -
If I understand your original post correctly, you've started a contract for a new line which is for 12 months, you've additionally taken a 12 month contract for BB from BT.
If thats the case, then you didnt have to take Broadband contract with BT, you could have gone with another supplier from day 1. But I dont think there's any free way out of it now, you've been using the service for months.0 -

Thanks everyone for your replies.
The problem was, when I took out the original BT contract for the line rental, they signed me up for 12 months.
I then wanted to get a deal from Tiscali, where they would do line rental/calls/broadband for £19.99 per month. BT (& Tiscali) told me I couldn't do this as I need to honour my first year with BT - but I also couldn't do it without taking out the 12 month contract with BT.
Either way, I HAD to get a 12 month BT line rental contract - which is just wrong! I can't believe the monopol they have on the phone lines, and the way they treat their customers... don't get me started.
Plus the £4.50 charge for paying my bills in cash - I'm looking forward to getting this refunded on day as this is surely illegal!
All in all, I'm just pretty narked off with BT and was hoping I could swap supplier without any charges... nevermind... I will just have to stay for another 6 months.
Thanks for everyone who replied - much appreciated.

That's not the case at all, any supplier can provide new lines, it's just that more of them, Tiscali included, choose not too, which results in you being in the situation that you're curently in.0 -

The correct money saving approach here would have been to investigate the market and realise that you could have internet from a whole heap of suppliers by ordering just the BT line. Nobody forced you to have the internet. Nobody forced you to buy it from BT. So your whinge does make you look a bit foolish. The only way out is to be a money loser and buy out of your contract. Good luck. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -
I'm in a similar position to you dubfire. I'm moving next week and I have had to take a 12 month contract on BT line rental, so I can't get any of the line rental included deals on broadband/phone/etc. However I haven't taken BT broadband because its stupidly expensive and you don't have to as people have already said. So I will be taking broadband with another company.
I'm afraid unless someone at BT mislead you and told you you HAD to have BT broadband then there's no way out of the contract, and even then it would be difficult.0
