Well we are off to Pontins next week and we are taking £500 in cash. Off to Blackpool the week after and have £1,000 set aside for that.

When we are self catering in Pontins we go to Iceland in the local village and buy essentails, milk, bread, marg, yogs, some quick micro meals (not MSE i know but you dont want to spend your holidays cooking!). There are 2 adults and a 6 year and a 11 month old (we take food and formula for him with us). We are also going with my parents and aunt so they do some shopping too and we usually all have cooked breakfasts in the morning.

We do this as its cheaper than eating at the onsite pub, and DH and DS1 are fussy eaters anyway!

We found haven reeeeeeeeeaaaaallllly expensive, make us of the cooking facilities in your caravan as much as possible make chilli etc and make butties for during the day. Obviously you have to pay for drinks etc in the evening. We spent £1000 for one week in haven for 2 adults and 1 child, but we did go with friends so did a lot of drinking/eating out etc.

We also took a slow cooker so we could plop it in in the morning for when we got back to save on time and the fact that caravans can get over crowded when trying to cook for a few people.

Also remember that things like the bouncy castle/go carts etc are all an extra cost. We are trying parkdean holidays this year just to compare prices cos you can't beat holiday parks for an enjoyable holiday for the kiddies :)

Take things like your own washing up liquid/ tea towels etc as well as they are not provided and i guess they wil charge more in the on site shop.

Hope some of this helps, have a fab time x

I wouldn't eat in Havens on site. The food (in my experience) is microwaved, overpriced and often the service is pretty slow.

We are going to lakeland next week and I plan on sneaking in some voddie and just buying coke at the bar.

I'd also suggest giving your 9 year old a daily allowance - then she/he can decide whether a shot on the bouncy castle is worth it !

Saving money and eating out on site are mutually exclusive; eat in and save your money for going out and about.
  • Hi Carlos700, which site are you going to ? I ask because we always used to order Tesco home delivery to arrive a couple of hours after we did. Devon Cliffs in Exmouth was our Haven site. It's great, saves time & effort. The onsite shops are very expensive.
As to spending money, its hard to judge, do you drink regularly? enjoy eating out etc. We would only spend approx £200 for a family of 5 for the week, this would include a couple of evening meals out, fish& chips at luch & a trip to a local theme park type place. Hope this helps.
Ps, we have always been MSers, even before it was fashionable!!!!!

We went to haven at berwick a few years ago and took a lot of food for the week. What a disaster, the freezer didnt work, the fridge was hopeless and a lot of food was wasted. I would if you can take packet/tin stuff that wouldn't perish.

umm, i'm in the same quandary. we're going to a europarcs site in spain so will be eating out in the local town every night, snacks through the day, the several trips out.
I was going to take £800 for ten days but now i'm worried it wont be enough. Should we take a grand to be on the safe side? eeeeek

What we do is find the postcodes of the local morrisons or tescos and do a routemap there. Usually take basics with us and then do a big shop when we are there. Haven shops are soooo expensive so we eat on a couple of nights then have snacky meals the other nights. Usually if you are out and about you could pick up fish and chips--we take our own peas, and sauce and cans of juice.

Oh yeah, we always take our own cans of juice. No way would we pay the prices they charge!! We get a case of coke, diet coke, lidls energy drinks and flavoured water for DS1.

Go prepared with your basics for the caravan (washing up liquid, cloths, etc) and make sure that you've got your tea/coffee/milk/sugar along with a couple of boxes of breakfast cereal and bread & butter for when you get there.

Suppose it depends how much money you've got available to spend. Some of the other ideas suggested are really good, like taking cans of juice and multipacks of crisps with you (or buying them nearby when you get there, rather than getting them on-site, v expensive!)

    Enjoy your holiday though!
