I also use Textmefree/fonetastic. You get 6 free sms a day, but it isn't 100% reliable.

You can get a free program that makes sending free texts really easy from here:

it lets you send via various sms websites, lets you share a single addressbook with all supported sites, lets you send extra long messages (splits messages into parts), saves your login + password info, so u dont need to enter it each time, plus lots more features.0 -

On the O2 site it is easy to set up multiple accounts, so you can effectively send unlimited texts from a reliable operator at no cost and with no risk of your number being passed on to spammers. It must be the best bet for UK texts.0
