How Do I Deal With Non Collection Of Pick Up Only Item?

I sold a plant stand on 03/07 and when sending the invoice realised buyer was from about 80 miles away.I contacted him and reminded him that the item was for collection in person only and also stated that if that was okay he could pay cash on collection so to ignore the invoice sent (the invoice also stated collection).I also gave contact number and address

The buyer responded stating that he had a friend who lived near me and his friend would contact me shortly to arrange pick up and would pay cash on collection. After 3 days without a call i sent a reminder to the buyer that I had not received contact from his friend. He apologised and stated he would chase his friend up.

It has now been a week since the auction ended and still no contact.Theoretically I could open a dispute as no payment after 7 days but would this get complicated as i advised buyer to ignore invoice and pay on collection?

I do not know what to do next as have no payment and it does not seem that I am going to get the collection phone call.Any ideaas?

Thanking you all in advance- and yes I know I dont get much luck!! lol

I can offer no advice other than hold fire a little in case he had problems contacting his friend.

I sold my DD's leap pad last year with about 30 books and because I couldn't be bothered with posting it I stated collection only. It was won to my dismay by someone in Spain........

Turned out they had a friend who lived up the road who was travelling out to visit in the summer and she collected it for them. It took them about a week to organise, but she turned up, paid cash and was happy with her purhase.

I'd send the buyer one last email. Remind them that normally items should be paid for within 7 days and that payment was going to be made on collection. Say youve had no contact from their friend and ask when it is going to be collected.

If you get no response within a couple of days then you will have no option but to start a NPB dispute to get your fees back and be able to relist.

On a slightly different note,i sold a collection only item over week ago, buyer lives 200 miles away! They paid straight away via Paypal. No reply to 3 emails so she probably thinks i've not posted it.Item was only £10 so not worth travelling that distance(400 mile round trip).probably going to just refund her.

    Thanks Kevin-

I sent the buyer a reminder (final) and he paid via Paypal and sent me a message saying sorry as a sign of intention to collect I have paid via Paypal (which i did not want) and also promised his friend would contact me about collection yesterday. No contact yesterday but cannot open NPB dispute as now paid.

I dont know what to do now as have payment but still no sign of collection-Any ideas? Thank you

Is there such a thing as a "Payment but no collection dispute"? lol

You need to refund the payment or you are leaving yourself wide open for a claim.

But wouldnt that leave the OP open to a Non Performing Seller Claim anyway?

This is an awkward one and Im not really sure how to proceed on this one. They have paid so they are not a NPB however there is a limit to how long the OP should reasonably have to wait for collection with the inevitable risk of a chargeback for which delivery cannot be proved.

Its a great system eBay have with this compulsory Paypal rule isnt it? I was hoping Soolin might pop in and offer some advice as she can usually be relied upon for the most balanced advice around on these matters.

Under ebays new rules, yes, but as you say its an awkward one. If it was a cheap item then it may be worth holding out, but if we are talking £30+ I'd refund and take the hit.

Did we ever get any clarity on whether sending a recorded envelope with a receipt to the buyer would suffice with paypal in these cases?

There has been no definitive answer but the ebay community forums seem to be suggesting it will not work for a variety of reasons.

OP, this is a diffiucult one as most suggestions could leave you open to a complaint of some sort. You can't return the money as it is an accepted payment method and you can't refuse to sell as you'll get hit with an NPS. All I can suggest is that you give the buyer a time frame of 7 days to collect and state that after that you will consider the trannsaction null and void and will refund the money and re advertise the item. Yes this still leaves you with the threat of a neg and NPS but it rids you of the paypal on collection problem. Frankly you could start hoping that buyer does fail to collect.

Alternatively if you wanted to try it then why not go for the letter by recorded delivery confirming that item is to be collected at such and such a time and giving your mobile number to them. Even if it isn't enough to guarantee that you'll win a paypal chargeback, it might be worth a gamble?

Personally if it was me I'd refund the paypal stating something about it's against ebay rules to accept electronic payment on a collection item. Tell them it needs to be paid for in cash and collected within say 2 maybe 3 days, and their friend needs to contact you asap on 077******* or the item will be resold

Surely though making such a blatantly false statement will make the OP look like a scammer. Anyway, no bidder is going to fall for the 'not allowed to use paypal' when every ebay page they view tells them they need to pay that way to have any protection.
