  • Interesting thread - we have just pulled out of buying a house (ex council though) because of this. The mineshaft is overlapping the property and also next door's. Too risky to get into it so we're looking elsewhere. Glad to see we've made the right decision then!

I wonder how the op got on?
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

We are currently going through the joy of ground consolidation works under our tenement block in Glasgow. When we bought our flat the coal authority report stated that it was likely that we lived in proximity to mine workings, but that is the case for much of Glasgow. There were no records of workings in the immediate area however.... We were then informed a few months ago that the council geologist had discovered very early workings deep under our block and they were very keen to do preventative works. They started drilling and pumping concrete deep under our block a few weeks ago and it will likely continue for a couple of months. Cost shared among all the flats - not able to claim on insurance as it is preventative rather than remedial.

Hoping that a shiny letter from the council saying that works are complete and measures are permenant solution will make our wee flat desirable when we try to sell it. Suspect people may hear that works have been done and lump it together with the dreaded 's' word.

In our area there have been a couple of incidences of buildings or infastructure slipping due to mine workings, but in general the properties are victorian and have stood the test of time.

ditto the information about blackheath, a long term residential area, georgian and victorian houses. the a2 collapsed and the whole area closed off, traffic nightmare for months

down the road from where i now live are victorian houses built around old chalk mines. 2 years ago it was all in the paper that some of the roads had collapsed and residents had to be moved out due to the dangers of the houses falling down

    its too risky i think
