Laptop vs PC

Hello i was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction.
My pc is on it last legs. I was looking into getting a new one but then i thought about getting a laptop to save space.
The monitor, speakers, keyboard and printer are still working fine, but it seemed to me to be just as cheap to get a package pc?
Can you get a laptop that will still be as good as a pc for a similar price?
Will be using for internet, a couple of downloads and doing photos.
Main thing is a want a fast computer, would like as cheap as possible obviously but would rather pay for a better model so that it will last longer.
Any helpful hints or a point in the right direction would be most appriciated.

If you want fast and cheap then you should go for a desktop, plus it's easier to upgrade to keep it running well.0

Have to say, contrary to be_alright, personally I'm a complete laptop convert...for the things you say you'll be using it for, either a laptop or desktop will be quite sufficient. A laptop, however, you can sit on your lap in the lounge, sling in the boot if you're going on holiday, etc etc etc...
If you *need* a superfast PC for the money, then you're still best off with a desktop...but I really think for most people lappies are the way forward...0 -
If you have a laptop with the exact same spec as a desktop, the desktop WILL always win in speed and performance. Lots of reasons that I wont go in to right now.
Also, a desktop is easier to upgrade and cheaper than a laptop.
My opinion, go for a new desktop,Rules, Rules, Rules .....0 -
Thanks for the quick replies.
Will go for a desktop then. Does anyone know of hand any good models. Been looking but really i dont have clue what anything means so it is a bit pointless.
Think it is time for a trip to PC world to harass the sales staff there.
Thanks again0 -

Whatever you do don't do that.
What's your topmost budget0 -
Top most budget would probably be £1000 and only really need the hardrive, although would be quite nice to have new extras for that price, dont really need them!0

How much do you want to spend. I no your top most is 1000 but ideally what do you want to spend. DONT go to PC World.
I would go to Dell for a PC if I didn't know anything about computers, otherwise, try getting one made. We can do that for you but your probably best going to a local computer shop. It will not only be cheaper usually, but consist of better parts so be faster and more reliable.Rules, Rules, Rules .....0 -

Well you can get a great computer for that price.

Very true...but if you're not going to be using the speed, what's the point in having it?
If you're not bothered about ever upgrading, what's the point in being able to do it cheaply?
And if the lappy in question's only £300, you're not going to find a desktop for a *lot* less, anyway.
(Sorry, I wandered off and forgot to press post)
I'd think hard before spending a thousand quid on a new computer - from the description of what you want it for, I'd suggest paying half that's plenty...0
