Yes I know. That is a guide on how to use it. Well its a guide for the XP backup manager. Vista will be basicly the same process. But I didn't see him anywhere say he was using Vista.

Sorry - no I didnt say that I was using Vista, but I am. (also, I am female:o )

External hard disk just like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/750GB-750-EXTERNAL-HARD-DISK-DRIVE-USB-ESATA-Desktop_W0QQitemZ230268762482QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230268762482&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1308

Plug it into a USB port on your computer and then just drag and drop your files like normal copying.

    Couldn't be easier. :)

I use an external hard drive AND I backup online using Mozy (currently about 12 GiB of my stuff is on Mozy and you do NOT backup one document at a time, you specify which folders etc you want backed up and it schedules backups of any changes to the documents in those folders etc). As well as making disc copies (CDs/DVDs).

    http://www.jungledisk.com/ is an excellent service.

It's a wrapper for Amazon's S3 web service which provides you with secure, encrypted storage on Amazon's *very* high-end, reliable servers.

    Certainly worth a look.

So would you store the external hard drive in the same place or would you be able to move it around?? (for instance when we go on holiday could I put the hard drive at someone elses house?) sorry if I sound thick, but I really have no clue!

    Assuming you have windows vista...

    Go to:

    Start>Control Panel

    Switch to classic view

    Backup and restore center

    Backup files

    Then simply follow the steps

Right I tried this and I have so far used 4 disks and less than half of the information has been backed up!! I dont have any more blank disks (it wont let me use ones that have been used for anything else!)

I know that I am being really thick :o

    I've found:

    www.diino.co.uk

to be pretty good. It has online backup capability built-in, which will only upload changed files.

Hi Stompa - have you used this?? do you have to drag each file individually??

Yeah, you could put it anywhere. Fireproof safe would be your best best I think.

Unfortunately my office is the size of a postage stamp but perhaps one to think about in the future!

Yes, I use it, and no you don't have to drag individual files. You can just drag and drop multiple files/folders in the same way as in Windows Explorer.

Having said that I've not used the online backup capability, but it looks as though you just specify (multiple) folders. More details here:
