Hope your not on a water meter. I wanted to fit an outside tap but being on the front of the house I have decided against it. Had visions of children turning it on when i was away and leaving me with a great big bill (would of been ideal for washing the car)

I will think again if there is a way to lock it.

My outside tap is fitted to the pipework from under the kitchen sink. On the pipework between the source pipe and tap I have a "penny valve/washing machine type tap" so i can keep the tap switched off from inside. Stops it from freezin in winter and stops the window cleaners using it.
This type of thing i mean https://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=100121&ts=70284&id=16505

  • Two minutes on google produced this and this. Take your pick.

Aletank: I let my windowcleaner fill his bucket from my tap; also, it has never frozen.

I don't use my local window cleaner but he was still climbing over my fence/gate to use my tap. If I did use his services I'd gladly give him a bucket of warm soapy water.
If he would knock and ask for water I'd give him some even though i don't have my windows cleaned by him, but to climb over a gate/fence when I'm in with out asking is takin the P***

You'll find anything with a lock on it will seize up over time and you wont be able to use the tap.

Most brass taps have a turn handle that can be removed, this leaves only a spindle and nothing to grip onto.

As someone previously posted, why not put a service valve on the inside of the house ??

.......as winter is fast approaching, why not turn off the water to the outside tap. Then, just turn it on and off again by the event.

I'd be tempted to hang a notice from the tap to say, 'I pay for this water on a meter so I will be collecting payment from you for taking the water you've used, without asking my permission first.'

The window cleaner won't be able to get any water next time he tries (because you've turned the supply off) and he'll quickly get the message that he isn't welcome on your property.;)

  • Take a look on E-bay where you will find an outside tap cover. Just search for 'Tap Lock' or 'Tap cover' and you should find the item. Its a lockable steel box designed to protect the tap. Hope this helps.
