  • You should be fairly safe if you stick with a korma or Pasanda. Both are very mild ad in creamy sauces.

Moghlai Chicken/Prawn/Lamb is creamy with pineapple in it. Chicken Bhuna is mild too, I never eat hot curries and love any of the ones I've mentioned.

As a starter all of you could go for poppadoms and ask for the pickle tray, then we usually have onion bhaji's (we share), then a meat curry with pilau rice and a vegetable dish too. If you want naan bread, I love Peshwari naan, it has coconut and sultanas in it.

  • The mildest curry on a standard Indian menu is normally Korma. But don't be embarrassed to ask the waiter - after all, s/he's there to help! Lots of people ask for the mildest thing on the menu (one example being anyone who's breastfeeding) - enjoy it!

P.S. I agree that Biryani is great, but I've had some really hot ones in my time. :o Check with the waiter!

PPS You asked what to do with the bread. Bread and rice are the carbohydrate bits of the meal - my experience of eating with Indians is that they normally have one OR the other (but you can have both!) Use any form of bread to mop up the sauce. 'Roti' means any sort of Indian bread. The most common form is Naan, a tasty bread made with yeast. As a previous writer has mentioned, you can get slightly sweet forms of this WHICH MAY CONTAIN NUTS (could be important!) You might also be offered chappati, which are flatbreads a bit like 'wraps' you get in sandwich places, or puri, which are deep fried delicious puffed up little breads (my favourite, about a million calories each).

Hope this helps. Can I come? Now salivating........... :D

    Hi

For starters you will have a poppadums. They are like big crisps and ask for mango chutney to dip them in.
You can also samsosa's which are like small pasties but crisper. You can either have veg or meat ones.
Onion bhajis are nice too, just onion in crisp batter.

For main, ask for a butter chicken, its scrumptious. Not at all spicy. Korma's are a nice mild curry too. If you tell them that you want something mild they will recommend. Any rice is nice, mushroom rice is our favourite.
Tandoori chicken is quite spicey but very tasty, well worth a try.

Peshwari naan is the best tasting bread, nice and sweet, delicious when dipped in the butter chicken.

This is making me hungry !

    Enjoy yourself:D

  • Lucky you - your first real curry. You could always nip down to the deli counter at waitrose or sainsbury and buy a small tub of korma etc to give you an idea first.
If you are particularly hungry,I recommend having a tikka as a starter.Delicious and nothing like what you get in a chicken tikka sandwich.

At my first trip to an Indian, I was advised to order a korma but I wasn't keen on it. It's a really creamy sauce, and I'm not so keen on cream so didn't enjoy it.

However the man opposite loves korma and he'd ordered a balti, so we swapped half our dishes! I really enjoyed the balti - lots of vegetable flavours and not too spicy.
Here I go again on my own....

Does anyone know what to order in an Indian restaurant that has absolutely NO chilli in it? I do like spicy food, but unfortunately am allergic to chilli (I swell up, go blotchy and have trouble breathing  ) in any form. It's an utter pain, as so many different foods have chilli in these days. Had a nasty experience with a Chinese takeaway a couple of months ago, even though I'd explained the problem and they'd assured me those particular dishes didn't contain chilli - maybe it was in the spice mix or something. Anyway, if anyone does have any advice about what dishes would be OK, I'd be very grateful...........
