im glad this has been bought up.
im sick of seeing certain posters just waiting to jump on folk for posting in the wrong section.
most comments from them are rude and uncalled for.
it needs to get back to being a nice place without the hoard of mini hitlers waiting for the next time somebody dares post in the wrong place :(

  • Sorry for dredging up this thread but didn't want to start a new one... ;)

Just lately there has been a huge amount of freebie offers that are being posted a number of times by "newbies" and "olderies" alike... the board is getting daft (in my humble opinion)... and quite hard to follow at times, never quite knowing whether freebies have been applied for or not... or is it just me??

The comps board seems to cope really well with duplicate posts... what can we do as a community of freebie hunters to get this board a bit more user-friendly? :j

Maybe we could have a thread instead of a sticky, showing Jo_b's guidelines here.

Shall I start one, and see how it goes?
We could bump it every so often.

  • Anything is worth a try in my book... perhaps we should wait and see what other suggestions (if any!) are made...

Could do a thread on how to search, as that does not seem to be mentioned in the sticky you mention MD...

just not sure how many folk read stickies... ;) it would appear if folk don't see the offer on the front page (or in some cases the first few pages) then they just assume its never been posted before...

BTW I hope folk don't think i'm not appreciative of their efforts on this board, I for one have had stacks of things from folk highlighting freebies on MSE...

I've just seen this in Martins 'Instructions, Rules and Guide to Chat'

    Some commonly asked questions

How do I find out whether my subject is already being discussed?

It's always worth checking to see if the information you are looking for is already on the site. Search the main site: On the home page www.moneysavingexpert.com you will find a search box at the top of the page. Above that is a drop-down menu. Here you can choose to search either the main site or the forum. Simply tap in one or two words that are relevant and all the articles should appear – in the main site search if you “put a phrase in speech marks” then it does an ‘exact match’ search.

Maybe we could title the thread

'Martins Instructions, Rules and guide to Chat'

Then paste his own info as I've quoted above, nothing more than that.

That may get people to read it then, as it's not to much info all at once.

i hardly ever add a freebie on here, but use and thank those posted by others. the reason for this i have read many posts on here and the rude/nasty comments and i dont want them sent to me. i have better things to do than respond to it.
due to spilling coffee :coffee: on my keyboard it works when it wants to :rotfl:

    2) exist users just re-post old freebs to get their Thanks count up.
Do you really think people do this? There's nothing to be gained by having a big 'Thanks' count is there?

I agree that it is annoying when someone has posted a duplicate freebie almost directly after the original was posted and usually there is enough time gap between them for it not to be accidental. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to check the front page to see if already listed before listing. Also so long as people are polite when pointing out a duplicate post I don't see the problem. However, I have seen a few times where people have been alittle rude!!!
