Not necessarily an essential idea but something the previous owners of our house did when we moved in ... the night before we moved they had a bbq and invited all the neighbours so they could say goodbye ... and they also invited us along and introduced us to everyone so we would already know them a bit and when we got here some of them were already waiting for us!! Estate agent said he'd never seen it before but thought it was lovely and would mention it to new clients! Am now about to move again but will really miss the neighbours, they've been great:beer:

  • I helped my sister to move last weekend and my new tip is - Doorwedges! Buy a few doorwedges to wedge open the door you're going through and the door of the room you're heading for. There's nothing worse than trying to open doors while you're holding/balancing boxes! But be mindful of security (and stray cats!).

And speaking of cats/other pets, these are another lot that should be "farmed out" for the day to friends, or even put into a cattery/kennels, as they will find the whole moving experience with lots of strange folks in and out even more stressful than you will. The last thing you want is the little furry lodgers running away when you're all packed and ready to go off and collect the keys.
Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...

A box of light bulbs, (always wondered why people take them with them ???)

A tool box or some tools incase you need to take a door off or similar to get the furniture in.

get a mobile number for the removal van driver and give him yours, you dont want to be standing around waiting for hours to find out they had a puncture and got lost.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
    Mortgage - £2,000

  • I also moved houses recently. From previous experiences of moving myself, i decided to get a removal company to do it all for me. I used a company called Handy Moves to come in and pack all my things, it only cost £160 for 2 guys to come in and pack my 2 bedroom flat. The guys were great and it took alot of hassel out of moving house. They even supplied all the boxes and materials, it cost only £85 for 20 boxes and all the materials like tape and bubble wrap.

The move to my new house was stress free, the guys done the job in around two hours and it cost around £110.

I would recommend them to everyone

I left a note with the numbers and addresses of local takeaways, doctors, dentists, hospital etc for the new owners who came from another town. With the note I left my new phone number and a bottle of wine.

The new owner found all the info great and even fetched the cat to my new house when he went for a visit!
The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T

Any flat pack furniture or anything for that matter that you need to take apart which has screws etc. Put the screws into a cheap sandwich/plastic bag and tape to a part of the item you have taken apart. This means you have the right screws to put the thing back together with.

Useful with cots - my mate lost a set of screws for her LO's cot during a move cost her £15 for a new set and LO had to sleep in her travel cot until the new set of screws arrived!

    get a note book.

Label every box with a number and write the number on the page of ur note book with a list of whats in the boxes. Also write what room to put the box in on the top.

Shove the things u will need that day or the day after all into your suitcases so they r easy to find :)

    and freecycle is your friend!
