Reducing my tariff on 3 Mobile.....

......Hi Guys,
Having recently accepted a 6 month secondement to India I have found that I no longer require the final 2 months on the above contract. However, as I am still within the minimum term of the initial 18 month contract, I will not be able to just simply cancel.
A friend recently informed me that a mobile provider simply cannot refuse to reduce a tariff should the customer be experiencing either financial difficulty or are leaving the country for extended periods of time.
As I am currently paying £35 p/m for my existing contract, the idea of being able to reduce this to the lowest tariff does appeal but I would like to know if the advice I have been given is accurate just in case I need to plead my case and assert myself should 3 Mobile decide to be obstinate about it.
Thanks in advance!!
