DVLA fines

I just recieved my car tax reminder today. I have a 2.0L Mazda 6.
The yearly cost has gone up to £210 !!!
I cannot afford this - next year I hear that the tax will go up to about £400 !
nobody can afford this.
So I contacted my local police station and they were very helpfull. Basically if you register your vehicle as SORN then all they will do is notify the DVLA if they spot your vehicle on the road. thats all.
The DVLA will contact you. So what can the DVLA do? fine you - how much? clamp your vehicle - how much will it cost to unclamp? what other penalties can the DVLA impose.
At these prices it might just seem to be the sensible option and take the risk.
What do others think of this suggestion. I know its illegial and I have insurance - have done for many years.
If it goes up even more then nobody can afford to tax thier vehicle - dont the government realise this? they must be idiots!

Car tax is a relativly minor % of running a cars cost per year. If you dont like it, buy a smaller engined car.

Cant afford it, then get rid of it.

DVLA can also crush the car. And so on. And so on.

And trolls posting on MSE are not going to get anyone to condone your actions. Best of luck.

Without Tax, your vehicle may be subject to clamping and then the tax back dated along with the release fee.

Without Tax, your vehicle may be subject to removal, and then daily storage fees and back dated tax.

You'd also set off ANPR attached to police cars, sat on motorway bridges, etc.

Your first years tax is £400, not every year. £210 isn't much for the luxury offered by driving such a new vehicle.

Perhaps the Government want you to consider other transport options?

    From the DVLA website

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) carries out a computer check each month, as well as roadside checks to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. You could face an automatic penalty of £80 as well as a minimum fine of £1000. Your vehicle could be clamped, impounded or even crushed.

If the police spot the car with ANPR or it is reported, then the DVLA will send you a fine of £80 plus the back dated Tax. If they come to thew vehicle you will be clamped with a release fee of £80 (not entirely sure if this is in addition to the £80 fee) if the flat bed lorry is nearby they can tow it immediately. This will not cost you any more than the £80 but you will have to travel to collect the car within 24hours otherwise the costs start to rise. If you get clamped and do not pay £80 within 24 hours, and then they tow you, you will be charged for the tow aswell.

You can opt to let the car be crushed and owe nothing AFAIK.

As your vehicle is currently £210 that means it is over 185 g/CO2

Next year it will go up to the following depending on what the CO2 value is. The 1st column will be the 2009 prices, the second column is the 2010 prices. The blue ones are what your car might be if, as I think, it might be 195 g/CO2

    J 181-200.....£260....£270
    K 201-225.....£300....£310
    L 226-255.....£415....£430
    M Over 255...£440....£455

Feel free to sell your car, and buy a tax free band A car.
  • if you cant afford the tax sell the car, not point in sorning it as tax will always go up

Actually lots of people can afford this. They may not like it but thay can afford it and will. Compared to the other costs of running a car it's not really that much.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
