Nationwide Credit Card payment due tomorrow but all methods of payment take 5 days?

Hi All,
My nationwide credit card payment is due tomorrow and I can’t seem to get the payment to them in time.

I’ve been into the branch and a cash payment or transfer over the counter takes 5 days. Online banking payment takes 5 days. I’ve been on the phone to the credit card helpline and they will only take payment over the phone tomorrow and that will incur late charges because you guessed it that takes 5 days!?!

So it seems I cannot make payment in time any ideas?

Cheers

oh dear, looks like you will get charged GBP12 and get a mark on your credit file...next time use DD for min. payment. what about doing a direct payment from your current account through the net? might reach them tomorrow...but i doubt it

Your best chance of subsequently removing any late payment marker and getting your £12 and any interest back is to initiate a payment today...ideally over the branch counter and/or from your FlexAccount.

That way, it'll look better because at least you've realised and tried BEFOREHAND.

Good luck with it and, as the previous poster says, learn from this mistake and set up a DD.

agreed - pay as soon as you can - then ring up after you 'discover' the charge and beg for it back!
Be nice to the person you speak to - they appear to have some flexibility in my experience.

And do as Ivan Konstantinov says - set up a Direct Debit - perhaps that can be part of the telephone conversation.

    Good luck
  • Like you say it' looks like I'll be taking the knock. Just thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone knew something I don't.

I've asked the the question on my Nationwide online banking and if they don't get back before 5 I'll do a transfer and at least the payment is on route.

Probably not much help this time, but I have set up a direct debit for my Nationwide credit card to take the whole amount each month. It goes out of my current account on the date the account is due to be paid and seems to take a day or so to show up as having been paid online but I have never been charged a late payment fee. If you set up a direct debit to pay it then I expect as it is up to them to collect it at the right time then they can't charge you for being late.

I think you will find that the small print says that you should allow x-number of working days for the payment to be processed even if it is in cash. On this occasion what I would do is pay in cash at a Nationwide branch and see what happens. You can always appeal the charge if they make one. If you have never been late before they may agree to waive it this time. It's worth a try.

This happened to me once with Nationwide and as it was cash over the counter from my flex account the cshier said ring to ring up if a late payment charge was levied. Payment was 1 day late but no charge was levied

If you had a Nationwide current account (Flex) the payment goes through as an internal transfer on the same-day (appearing after one day wih the preceding date). Never tried making a payment to anyone else's NW credit card this way - but it may still work that way.

[Having just looked at my own online banking, the payment to my NW credit card appears under 'Your own accounts' rather than 'Payment arrangements' elsewhere.]

Assuming you have no Flex account therefore the only thing I can think of is to get a friend or relative who might have an account to set up the details and make an immediate payment.

[[strike]I've got access to a relative's Flex account online but have only been able to set up a small test payment to my NW credit card to leave tommorow. That's because I can't make new 'single' payments without their card/pin/pin reader whereas NW will allow anyone with online password access to create standing orders without recourse to a pin reader. The problem with this however is that such a payment can't leave today - unlike a 'new single arrangement' - so I can only tell if this has worked two days from now - a day too late to help you out.[/strike]]

    Transfer Limits and Restrictions

Single payments to other Nationwide accounts
Transfers to a Nationwide Credit Card normally arrive the next working day. Transfers confirmed after 6.00 pm or on a Sunday will take an extra working day.

Looks like you are in luck then in having a Flexaccount of your own.... Take it from me the payment will arrive today (and show up tomorrow with today's date) if you make it from your own NW Flexaccount now!
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • I always pay the balance off in full every month and I’ve never missed a payment or been late so maybe they’ll go easy on me when I ring up to contest the late fee.
I’ve just made the transfer from my Flex account so I can prove the payment was sent before the due date and I’ve printed off the direct debit forms so it will not happen again.
I realise it was my fault for forgetting and if it was past the due date I say ho hum and move on. It’s the fact it’s not due until tomorrow but it’s impossible to pay which grinds my gears.
  • Hey Milarky, thanks for going so in depth! I do have a Flex account and I've made the payment from there. The credit card is listed differently from my other payments so maybe it will go through quicker fingers crossed!

Thanks for all the responses you’ve be great I’ll let you know how I get on.

    Cheers

I agree withe above's. Set up a DD at least for the min payment. If you do get a charge this time, 'phone them up and be a bit "creative" and I'm pretty sure you'll get the charge rescinded. Be prepared to be firm, but polite if necessary! Yopu might get away with two goes, but after that, I think "nodeal"! Good luck.
