Upgrading to iPhone 3G

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice... both my husband and I have iPhones on the £35 tariff. Obviously we are then expected to pay £99 to upgrade to the 3G if we want it. Having already paid £270 to buy the phone I can't help thinking it's quite unfair to be expected the same price as new customers. The new customers are now getting a much better deal than us and it just seems like O2 are unwilling to be helpful towards their existing customers. I've tried talking to O2 and they're not budging, just wondered if anyone has any top tips or things worth saying? Basically I would like to try to get a discount on my current tariff or have the £99 fee removed. Any ideas?

Well, to be honest, they're cutting you a break by allowing you to upgrade for £99 anyway - they'd be perfectly within their rights to say you either have to pay the remaining line rental or buy it at the full contractless price (expected to be about £300).

Ultimately, it's a choice. You don't need to upgrade unless you want to. As agsnu says, they are letting you out of your contract early.

Things could be a lot worse than being allowed to end your contract early, get a new phone and sell the old one as a PAYG for a significant chunk of cash.

I tell you what if either of you want to sell you original iphone, i'll give you £99
for it which it what you'll have to pay for the new 3g version, thereby your upgrade will be free.

Was going to say something similar. Am waiting for the market to be flooded with "cheap" original iPhones (I might even be willing to stretch to £150 or even £200, depending on the cost of PAYG iPhones). Others might pay more, so you should be able to make some of the money back.

Also wonder how much a 3G iPhone would fetch. The only real upgrade is the 3G connectivity, which is crap on O2 to begin with, so you *could* upgrade and flog the iPhone 3G for about the same price as PAYG version and profit slightly.

  • Oh, I know I'm being given a good option as it is... just a bit annoyed, but I'll get over it! Good idea about selling my old one. For some reason I thought it'd be worth nothing when the new ones come out but I guess if someone wants a Pay and Go iPhone then it'd actually be a pretty cheap way for them to get one! Might stick it on ebay then. Thanks for the advice!
