Yes, of course they are but they are also protecting us by preventing us from going through all the crap of sorting all this out.
I know I would rather them monitor the usage than have to go through all the trouble of dealing with the banks and card companies because I have been ripped off.

This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening with Barclaycard. Very worrying .....0

Is it just me or did no one else notice the fraud was from withdrawing Cash from ATM's? This means your card was cloned, easily done, but it also means that someone knew your PIN, kinda rules out the waiter in the restrauant & dodgy bloke at the garage.
This will make it more difficult when it comes to explaining how it wasnt you in london on a spending spree. CCC could also argue its your fault someone saw you pin, shoulder surfing or otherwise, making you liable for charges.
The only sure way out of this, was if you used your CC to withdraw funds from an ATM, and it was fitted with card reader & covert camera to capture you pin.
Anyhow hope it all works out.0 -
I recently made a large purchase with my Sainsbury's Bank Visa card, and the following day received an automated phone call asking me to verify that it was a genuine transaction.
They also have something called Sainsbury's Bank Secure so if I ever make another large purchase I can do it through that instead of them needing to check with me again.
In response to the OP, be prepared for this to go on for a while before it is sorted out. Whilst I personally haven't been the victim of fraud, I have read many times how others have had to wait months for an outcome.
Make sure you keep copies of any correspondence sent and received, the names of anyone you may talk to on the phone, and also the dates and times. Whilst hopefully you won't need them, they could come in handy.
You may also have to prove exactly where you were at the time the fraudulent transactions took place, so be prepared for that too - that would be my opinion although others may have the view that it is for the bank to sort out and that you won't need to defend yourself.
I don't have any doubt that you're the victim.0 -
Sorry to hear of your experience but it doesn't surprise me as ATM fraud climbed by 82% and I expect it to jump yet again when figures are released in November.
Martin Lewis pointed out in his Chip & PIN article that one of the 'money earners,' for credit card companies was that issuing a PIN with a credit card may encourage more people to use their credit card to withdraw cash - something that never happened before the banking code changed (previously you were asked if you wanted a PIN with your card) PINs are now issued automatically if you want one or not.
Needles to say crooks have started taking advantage of PINs.
My advice to you is to ask your card issuer/police if either ATM or street CCTV footage was in operation and is available at any of the ATMs where the cloned card was used.
As for obtaining your PIN this is relatively easy no matter many precautions you take.
It maybe time for you to ask for a Chip and Signature card before the 14 Feb 2006 then neither you nor a crook can get easy access to cash.
I Love PIN maybe the card issuers latest slogan, looks like its the crooks too!
Good luck with your card issuer.0 -
For all those still interested, I am v happy to report that Skycard have credited my account with the full amount, however (surprise, surprise) they refused to give any explanation as to how the fraud was carried out.
I must have made over 100 phone calls to Skycard and to their Fraud dept and am would not wish this experience on anyone. To their credit they did agree that I could make a nominal minimum payment whilst they carried out their investigations but their refusal to discuss their findings with me has meant I have lost confidence in their card and closed the account.
Thanks for all your advice and support0 -
Do you really think people are employed at credit card companies to watch people's spending patterns?
I have a Morgan Stanley platinum card with a whopping credit limit & if I make anything like a big purchase they are on the phone the same day. I am delighted they do this & it is far preferable to several months of grief.
I welcome their calls because I feel more protected. On top of that I get cashback each year for my purchases which often equates to around £400-£500 (yes I spend a lot:rolleyes:)but their refusal to discuss their findings with me has meant I have lost confidence in their card and closed the account.
Just be sure they issue you with a new card with a different number!0 -
Egg have called me no end of times to verify 'strange' or at least not usual for me transactions. I'm really happy that they do this.0

Wow that is getting on for £100k spend. Just out of interest I thought they stopped the cashback over a certain figure, say £20k.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
No, they keep giving cashback...a nice little bonus0
