twas not a personal attack frak , nor is it directed at you at all.
Merely it was instruction to a NOVICE , not someone whom needs the hassle and by a 3rd party.IF you know as much as I then you know the reasons why , and given that you dont know the EXACT nature of the pc then your summary should have erred on the cautious side.....after all if your experienced enough you will know that MOST pc users want press on and work....not changing settings.
I can make xp work on a lower spec machine , subject to correct drivers , changing flashy settings and so on ....but thats not xp then is it its a nt4 box with some changes and it wont run the way xp should in the first place.
Theres plenty pf sites dedicated to the LITE versions of operating systems should anyone actually need them , but by looking for it proves they tinker and want to know .....by asking someone else to ask someone else shows they want a toaster to surf the net , type a letter....so dont change is the desired result.
joe q public wants it to work from the off , the occasional person get fleeced in belief that the need something they dont ......sounds very like uncle bills plan perpetuated by those after a couple of quid like the man himslef.0 -
I can understand sides of the argument. Personally I think XP would be a good, and beneficial upgrade, as long as you can pick it up for a reasonable price. I'd also save any work and start with a fresh install. You won't have any problems running it on a system of that spec. And reducing the "look" or aesthetics of XP doesn't make it like NT4 (W2k at least). XP has a lot more support, and generally a good platform to go for.
Linux is a good suggestion, but to migrate in one move can be difficult, and time is required to learn the new OS. Whenever switching to Linux I'd recommend people to run it in dual boot with Windows. That way if you don't like it, or find it tricky, you still have Windows to go back to."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Have to agree with frak, upgrading is ok as Xp will work on Pentium II, the III is adequate.
I was going to start a thread re th best way to upgrade to XP, cos things like Voip will not work with 98, its gettin old. slow yet solid.
My thoughts are to keep the 98 hard drive and get a new larger drive for around £30. 80 gig if I can find one, then put that as a clean second drive and put XP on that.
This gives the best of both worldas as you can keep the computer running as it is booting from the old 98 drive, or use XP by changig drives with " My Computer", then later change over to XP by making your computer boot from the new drive. This should not be too difficult with help from friends and here.
Does anyone know the cheapes ( legal ? ) was to load XP?
