Cheaper Fridge running costs

hi there.
I've just been doing some thinking, is there any way of saving on the electric my fridge. The reason im asking for ideas is when the compressor is running it goes on and on for about 45 mins. I've tried lowering the thermostat but that doesnt seemed to make alot of difference.
I've got a mini fridge I use when Im staying away to keep my beer cool, I was wondering if that would be a better option.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

When you say "lowering" the thermostat, you mean turning it up to a higher temp right?
Lowering the stat would make the fridge try to get colder and result in the compressor running longer.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
lol - Yes I didnt think of that, but turned it from no 4 to 3, assuming 1 is the warmest and 6 in the coolest0

actually... now you put it like that,
I think you may be right..
1 probly means less cold.(or warmer) 6 would mean higher chilling(or colder)
OK I am confused now.. maybe you should just drink the beer and not worry about it...“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
Sounds good to me0

I'm re-thinking my Fridge/Freezer, Am.
Nowt in the fridge and only home grown fruit and veg in the freezer.
No ready meals and the like tho lots of frozen fish, perhaps could source that anotherway without having to run electric.0 -

safe fridge temperatures are between 2 and 8 degrees. Buy or borrow a fridge thermometer before you twiddle any knobs. I bought a thermometer and have increased my fridge thermostat from 4 to 6 as that gives mine a running temp of between 6.3 and 7.3. Putting the thermo on 8 was no good as it took it out of the safe zone
ps: defrost freezers regularly and superclean door seals0 -
Make sure that the rear of the fridge is nice and clear to allow the heat to escape, and don't leave the door open for any longer than absolutely necessary!0

Thanks for you're answers. I do have to keep defrosting my fridge quite a bit as the ice box keeps freezing up. I have checked the seals and they all seemed to be ok. The fridge is about 6 years old.0
