passport application

Hey Forum.

I have a friend who has never been on a plane and I want to take her on one for a special treat. She doesn't and never has had a passport, but without one our choice of cheap destinations is somewhat limited; and if your going to do something u may as well go the full way.

She went online to get a passport form sent to her as her post office didn't have any, but she has come across a problem. She needs to put her mums information, but she has and doesn't want any contact with her mum what-so-ever (for reasons I won't go into). I asked her if she could get this info from her or through her dad. However she said that she is not allowed to mention her.

Does anyone have any advice or information which may help relating specifically to her passport application.

email me direct if your prefer michael(decimal)d(decimal)fuller(at)gmail(decimal)com

Thanks.

Michael.

    Hello paramonkey

It's not a good idea to post your e-mail address in a thread.;)

Have you considered a flight within the United Kingdom, then your friend won't need a passport.........just a form of photo identification.

I have no idea where you live (will be flying from) but you could fly with BMIBaby to Jersey for example. There are lots of other UK destinations you could choose.

    I hope that helps.

She needs to write to the passport office setting out what the difficulties are and why she does not have the details. Also, why she is unable to obtain them. It will then be for them to decide whether to allow the application but in my experience they are very helpful over this sort of thing. It will take longer to sort out though.
  • Might seem like a tortuous route but if you go in person to the Liverpool passport office they are quite simply superb. Patient, helpful, kind, understanding and most of all efficient!! Wow, there's a thing!
Anyway, didn't think you needed a passport for places like France? can't you still get these visit visa type things for a one off?
If your friend doesn't know any of her mothers details it doesn't mean she can't find out , try searching on the web or look at Somerset House etc.
    Lots of ways round this.
    Good luck
  • Why does she need her mothers details? Even if she's under 16 she only needs the consent of her legal guardian(s). Besides, her mothers details will be on your friends birth certificate.

You need a passport everywhere in the EU except the Republic of Ireland.

At one time you could obtain a Travel Document (I cannot remember exactly what it was called) if you were travelling to France for no more than 24 hours (again cannot recall precise length of time - but it was designed primarily for day trippers on the forerunners of the booze cruises). You could obtain it at the ferry ports, but do not think it was ever avaialble for air travellers. It was discontinued approximately 20 years ago!

Other EU countries where they are signed up to the Schengen (spelling/name?) Treaty(?) can cross borders without a Passport but with an approvrd form of ID. However, as the UK did not sign up we need Passports to vist all EU countries except the RoI.

I am not sure why your friend needs mother details? What precisely does she need that she would not normally be aware of? The details that you need unless you were not born in the UK or are not a UK Citizen can all be obtained from your Long Copy Birth Certificate.

Hello - Having just filled out DS2 first ever passport application, as under 16 , all you need is Mums date of birth and if relevant her maiden name and date of marriage . Surely there is some family member that could assist if it is too painful for Dad to talk about Mum,and your friend does not want to contact her Mum? Good luck and enjoy the trip . Might be really really nice to add a bottle of bubbly (if old enough) to make it truly memorable . x

Hello, if your friend is born after 1982, the ppt office will need her mothers ppt number or her mothers birth certificate - which can be obtained from the Registers Office where her mum was born or from The General Records Office for a fee of £7.00 - anybody can obtain anybodied birth certificate - but obvoiusly you need her maiden name and date of birth - this must be sent with your friends full birth certificate ( showing parents details to your passport office) -it will only take about a week to 10 days after that

The details are on your birth certificate which you need to send up for identification. My stepdaughter hasnt seen her mum for about 10 years and now lives with her dad. When he applied for a passport for her he had to put her mums details on it.

Then because she has no contact with her mum anymore he had to get an extended birth certificate with his (the fathers) name on it also.

I applied for my passport earlier this year (had never held one before).

All I needed was a full copy of my Birth Certificate (which I got from the registry office for around £8) and 2 passport pics.

The form didn't ask anything about my parents at all.

P.S. How old is your friend?

Does your friend mean she needs a full birth certificate to apply for her passport, but doesn't know the information needed to obtain one???
