At least I haven't been singled out for special attention. Spent yesterday v. grumpy after putting all 6 of my outdoor plants into the compost bin, together with the majority of the remainder of the harvest - gutting after spending so much time nurturing them.
The speed of spread is incredible, plants fine a couple of days ago then devastated by Saturday morning.
Later today it'll be chutney for the 2.5kg salvaged.
Hoping for more luck next year in a new greenhouse!0 -
I've grown the blight resistant varieties for several years now and can heartily recommend Ferline as the best. Its a good growing plant, it tastes good and its very resistant to blight.

If you don't want to make chutney/pickles with all those pre-blighted green tomatoes, here's another possible option to avoid wasting them
GREEN TOMATO HASH
Ingredients:- 2 cups leftover chopped beef, pork, ham or corned beef
- 1 cup diced raw potatoes
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup diced green tomatoes
- 1/4 cup chopped onion, (can be fried first if preferred)
- salt and pepper, to taste
Combine ingredients; mix well. Turn into a buttered casserole and bake at 325° for 1 hour.
Serves 4.0 -

You want to get them out super quick as the spores will infect the compost too! Burn or bin them.Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

evie - I've not heard of blight spreading to pepper and chilli plants and would be worried if this happened as I'm growing these as well. I moved all my chillis and most of my peppers indoors a week ago because I was worried about the chillier nights affecting them.
Chilli and pepper plants can get a fungus but it's not blight.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I signed up with blightwatch (https://www.blightwatch.co.uk) this year, which notifies you if the conditions in your area are ripe for blight to appear. It's really for commercial potato growers but anyone can sign up. As soon as I got a warning from them, I rushed out and picked most of my tomatoes - green and red - and turned them into chutney and soup. A few days later, all plants left in the garden had succumbed to blight, so I thoroughly recommend this service. It's finished for this year, and you have to sign up each year afresh, but it saved me and my toms!0

Excuse my ignorance but what is "blight"? I grew cherry tomatoes for the first time this year and all of a sudden most of them went quite strange.. the green ones going darker in colour and having sort of tiny spots on, and the redder ones going more orangey brown in colour. they taste rank! some of the plant is ok still but for the most part its either like that or dying from the cold.
Could "Blight" be whats happened here?? they were doing really well!2008-2011: £23k of wins :eek:

I think I may be the only tomato grower in the UK that hasn't suffered blight!!. I brought all my plants into my kitchen about a month ago as I felt that the weather was too cool to help with the ripening and since then I have been inundated with tomatoes. We have them in salds as often as possible, I have 5 jars of chutney made and last night I oven dried a trayful with intention of putting them into oil in jars but they were so delicious we had them as a side dish with our tea.
