Wrap individually? i've got two bag fulls,is it not wise to wrap a few together?

sorry for the questions but i have to save these!its all i have left in my first year of gardening...

    thanks

They may all rot or they may not.

However if you wrap them up separately you increase the chance of actually getting ripened fruits.

Just a few comments, helpful I hope, green tomatoes should ripen I usually spread them out on a cardboard veg tray. I also use some for green tomato chutney if no time now I freeze them and do it later when there are plenty of windfalls(apples) about.
Tomatoes can get blight from tobacco so do not let anyone near them who smokes.
Precaution for next year wash greenhouse out thoroughly (include the soil and any pots to make sure) with Jeyes fluid I know it will smell like a public toilet but it is the best thing to kill all the fungal spores.
  • Thanks for the suggestions.

I have 3lb of green tomatoes I rescued and have decided to make chutney with them. I still have some tigerella I will keep a close eye on.

All my tomatoes are outdoor grown and I specifically grew them in growbags to prevent soil contamination from last year(!)

    Very frustrating though.

Nodwah - will try red alert next year, thanks

  • Hi Angela,

I'm down south like you and I've lost the majority of my tomatoes to blight too, this only occured in the last week though, while I was loking around for Green Tomato Chutney recipes.

I've lost all my ones at the allotment (Moneymaker, were the make) and they've infected my cherry ones (Tom Thumb, I think...could've made that up though) there too.

Only thing is that I'm losing my ones at home too, 5 mins away from allotment, these were in growbags, previously had loads of healthy fruits and now they are just going to go in the bin.

I had no cross-contamination as I've separate tools at the allotment and at home but I have heard that it does travel, how true this is I don't know.

I'm definitely on the look out for earlier cropping ones next year and will grow them in the potting shed as I didn't grow anything in there this year.

Thanks Nodwah for the tip on Red Alert.

    Best wishes

Had a wee look around and found 'Ferline' and 'Legend' are blight tolerant/resistant. have a look at the national veg sociey for a huge list of tomatoes. An offer is on these two at Thomsom and Morgan just now.

I'm off to look for one called 'Fantasio' now

Quite expensive but I supposse it's better than losing them all.
The strange thing is I haven't had any blight this year despite the wet, but I did last year- nipped it in the bud tho as it were!

  • Thanks nodwah, I've just ordered their main catalogue now, at £3.15 for a packet it's cheap in comparison to how much I'll have to pay in the supermarket, that'd cover about a couple of weeks worth of toms.

Have also separated all those that are left in the hope they ripen into something vaguely edible...although so far it's 5 more int he bin today.

  • I have 4 plants and they seem to have been struck with something.

There are quite a few tomatos and we have had a few ripe ones already. Those still on the plant look fine so far, but the stems have large-ish grey patches, and odd branches (mostly low down) seem to be dying.

Pics of tomoto blight I've seen on the net seem to have brown yeuchy patches on the fruit, but my fruit seem OK in appearance so far.

Whatever I've got, is it SAFE to eat the fruit - i.e. if it looks OK it's safe to eat?

Should I just pick ALL of the fruits now (even the green ones) and bin the plants, or should I allow them to carry on ripening and growing in the hope that I may still get more edible fruits from them?
  • I've lost about 30 plants in my garden in the last 3 weeks - all outdoor grown, some in ground and some in pots. Most people at our allotment have lost their crop too. Lost mine last year too. My worst affected and quickest to succumb were the beefy big varieties. I had a nice variety from T& M called Green Grape which seemed to last quite well. Raced round one evening to pick everything remaining and left to ripen but most have slowly turned brown, I daren't make green tomato chutney in case I use an infected one that hasn't turned:(
