My mother is trying to connect her new laptop with a new orange livebox but the "@" light insists on flashing rapidly. Orange are no help at all so the upshot is she cannot get wireless internet access at all and is still having to use her desktop pc with her dial up modem.

She has been through to India on numerous occasions following their instructions to no avail. They have now told her it's a line fault but she can receive broadband fine through her dial up.

Please can anyone help or offer a uk based helpline number before the livebox and laptop get thrown!!

Thanks

Have you tried getting into the menus of the livebox ? Normally http://192.168.1.1 I think

I had PPP server down error for days and that was Orange's fault.

Here is good for info and Orange watch this page too: http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=freeserve

As far as wireless goes the Livebox needs pairing setup via a button (unless you change it in the menus).

    Gleaned from Google:

Livebox is unlike other routers in that it has a pairing mode. It is only possible to setup a wireless device with livebox in the pairing mode which you make active for a period of time during the setup process. Once you have setup the device the livebox will automatically revert to non pairing mode and providing the setup has been successful the device will automatically connect to the livebox without going back to the pairing mode. This unusual way in which the livebox wireless setup works does provide additional security as if someone sees your wireless network on their pc or laptop they should not be able to hack in unless you place the livebox back in pairing mode.
You place the livebox in pairing mode by pressing button 1 on the livebox. Once pressed you should see the wireless light flashing on and off at about one second intervals for about 10 minutes after which it will autmatically switch off. If you do not manage to setup a device within this time you will need to place livebox back into pairing mode by further pressing button 1 on the livebox.

It's not possible you are trying the router with the usb modem attached to the line as well?, that won't work only 1 dsl modem on a line at same time i'm afraid.
also use the ethernet cable to set up the router, a livebox i set up recently was awful finicky about using wpa protection.

I have the crappy livebox and it is a faff, the instructions are wrong and their support are totally and utterly useless. Took them 9 months to fix my Talk service, when from day one I said it was the livebox at fault. After 9 months they agreed to ship me a new one - and wow..it worked, funny that. They even charged me delivery costs to send the old one back!!

how far have you got? what have you done to this point?
Are you connecting wired or wireless? Even though it advises connecting by wired first - ignore it, start off by connecting wireless.

Are you using the built in wireless connection, or the USB speedtouch wireless device?

Also the security key must be entered in UPPER CASE - catches a few people out.

The flashing @ though does mean it can't detect the broadband connection....so it could be as clear cut as that. when did you take out the Broadband contract - can take a while for them to activate it (10 days)

Orange have a habit of putting the onus on the customer when it comes to faults, I have had many problems connecting only to find out the DNS server was down......

The middle east call centers are a pain in the but, they have scripted procedures for their support staff, and keep going over the same rubbish when you call them....

The live box I like because of the added security and features, but I dont like the way it automatically updates and cuts out my internet often two to three times a day..

All in all I would not recommend Orange, After all it used to be Wannado and Freeserve. Any company that needed to change its name that many times, must have a shady past........

Orange has been having quite some problems with the service of late, my advise would be to wait a while, thats all you can do, seriously. As soon as they sort themselves out you should be able to re-connect.....

And when you subscription finishes, get you MAC code and drop them like a hot brick. I know I will be......:D

I've found the service to be great. Get my 8MB/s (I'm very close to the exchange)
    Never lose the connection.
The free phone calls is a bonus.

It's just their "customer Service" which leaves much to be desired. It truly is awful.
Your right, they just have a set script and you get nowhere fast.

There's only so many times one can turn it off and on again before you feel like ramming it down their throat.
The security is good though, and it's a very efficient firewall as well.

  • the @ refers to the phone line connection, is the line in the middle socket? Is ur dial tone normal?

Sounds like you can get an ASDL syncronisation. Got microfilters in every phone socket throughout the house, even if nothing else is connected?

    You need this.

Do you mean we need the ADSL filters or the white telephone filters which look very similar? I know you buy the phone filters from maplins. Will she have to buy a phone filter for every phone socket in the house even if she doesn't have phones connected?

She has four sockets which are never used all together. The master socket has a phone filter, another has a phone filter with a phone/fax/answer machine connected. The other two sockets are only ever used if she disconnects one of the others. She has two ADSL filters which, one of which she has tried connecting with her livebox.

I don't really know what you mean by telephone filter... like a splitter?

Anyway, yes: as I understand it, the very first thing plugged into every telephone socket in the house should be an ADSL microfilter, like the ones you got free with the livebox, even if nothing else gets plugged into some of the sockets.

They usually look like the top picture in this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL_filter

You might need to buy more, but I would personally avoid Maplin's, because they charge £7.49 or £9.99 for their filters, when they're really worth a lot less than that.

About £2 of £3 for two is the going rate for genuine BT branded ones on eBay:
