Help with knitting pls

Just taken up knitting again (after about 15yrs absence) and the pattern calls for K1P1, which I understand and after the Purl stitch I move the thread back to the back of the work, but, then on the next row the 2nd and 3rd stitches seem to be knotted together and virtually unworkable.

What have I done wrong?

I was really pleased with my efforts until the third row.:(

is it only the 2nd &3rd stitches of the row that are the problem is the whole lot in a mess? are you sure you are putting the wool between the needles and not over them?

are you purling into the front of the stitch aswell as putting the wool forward and knitting into the back aswell as putting the wool back?

Ahhhhh, do I have to bring the wool to the front after the Knit stitch and put it to the back after the Purl stitch. That would make FAR more sense.

Cheers Squeaky, am just looking at that thread now. It was actually the title of that thread that made me think about starting knitting again, but, I didn't read it as I didn't think I would be able to make anything worth contributing.

I learn a whole lot more from threads than I ever contribute :)

That helped me, too. I have also just started doing some knitting after I don't know how many years, and this was one of the things that I couldn't remember. I have been doing it cos it kind of made sense, but wasn't certain I was right!
    Thank you.
  • Yes to knit, the thread is trailng towards the pinkie, before you push the needle through the stitch. To purl, the thread is trailing towards the thumb, before you push the needle through the stitch.

Otherwise, you may be making an extra loop stitch or simply creating an extra thread that looks like a stitch.

I have been doing really well with my knitting and have made loads of mittens, scarves etc for kids, but, now I want to amke something for me too. I have got a really simple shrug pattern, (could even type it up one night and post it if anyone's interested - PM me and I will tell you which pattern, think it might be copyrighted), but, now,

    I'M BACK WITH MORE QUESTIONS.....sorry.......

Is machine wool (cones) the same as balls of wool?

    and

Is there much difference between "crepe" and DK?

    Thanks in advance.

Yep , you've got it right. Wool behind needle to knit next stitch, wool in front of needle to knit next stitch.

A neater edge can be obtained by slipping the very first stich of every row, rather than knitting it. (using the right needle slip the stitch off the left needle onto the right needle).

Also, for increasing/decreasing: work the first three stitches of the row then increase by picking up the thread between the third and fourth stitch onto the left hand needle and knit it, to decrease knit the fourth and fifth stitchs together.

Hope this helps someone, happy to clarify further - would have been easier to explain all this with a webcam :rotfl:

I think the 'knit' is much finer on a home knitting machine (more like the 'guage' on shop bought woollens) so the machine wool will be much finer than a ball of handknitting wool. And machine knitters will correct me if I'm wrong on this. Sometimes market stalls sell wool on large cones, this is often factory knitting machine wool and in my experience doesn't take kindly to being hand knitted.

Crepe just describes a special way the wool was spun - think of the difference between crepe paper and wrapping paper. Crepe can be spun as 3ply, 4ply, DK and chunky. HTH
