Knit up odds of wool to Help the Aged

I loved this idea that came through to me on an e-mail from innocent smoothies:-

Hats entertainment

Some of you may remember our Supergran project - you know, the thing where we knit lots of little hats and put them on our bottles in branches of the fine sandwich shop EAT. Well, it's time to start knitting 2005's batch. Last year you helped us knit 24,000 hats, which helped us raise £12,000 to help elderly people stay warm during winter. This year we want to knit 80,000 hats, so please pick up your needles, cast on and let the knitting begin - check https://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/supergran to find out how it all works.

it's such a simple thing to do and a great way to use up those scraps of wool, we're not going to save money but it sounds like fun and every one raises 50p for Help the Aged.

What a lovely post, and a fun idea. Old Stylers aren't the only Money Savers who knit though, so I'm going to move this post onto the Discussion Time forum where I hope even more people will spot it.

    Thanks :)

Sorry OP, I don't mean to offend but I think this is exactly the kind of thing that should be in Discussions.

It's a great idea but not a Moneysaving Oldstyle topic?

I just wanted to stick my tuppenceworth in as I think in this instance Squeaky was completely correct in his actions and I just wanted to support him.

As a member who occasionally pops in looking for tips or ways to cut down my food budget etc, I do sometimes feel there are too many threads that should not be here, strictly speaking.

I hope I haven't upset you by offering my opinion. I honestly don't want to do that. I just wanted to give a viewpoint from outwith the OS community.

This is true but it has spent two days in DT without a single post into it, so since Old Style includes home crafts we thought it might get more takers there.

I do see your point. Honestly.

It's just that there are guidelines for each board and this thread doesn't really fit within them for this board. I realise I sound like a right jobsworth now, sorry.

However, I will wheesht now (as my Mother would say) and leave you all to it. Happy Oldstyling (and knitting :D )

    Well anyway...... :D

I got me knitting needles and some wool, Googled 'cast on' and so far have one row of knitting :j only thing is, I can't find any instructions for 'purl' (at least non that I can follow :o ) So it looks like I'll have to send them a needle with one row of knitting on :(

When you purl you need to put the needle into the loop from the opposite direction to a "knit" stitch, coming towards you instead, then wrap the wool around as usual and pass through.

Arghhh it's much easier to show someone that try to explain it :o

I'll see if I can find any links for you with pictures on ;)

Ahhhh here you go ... purl stitch ... with more knitting instructions here :D

Lordy me - requesting the move back to OS from DT certainly got some discussion going didn't it. My apologies to aliasojo - I felt that from watching the hits on this post there was more interest coming from OS than DT. I don't think the post fits neatly into any category but seems to be of more interest to people in the OS forum and it's something to do not really something to discuss or it wasn't until al this toing and froing started.

And to set the record straight I didn't complain or contradict squeeky so I don't know that he needs "supporting", I think he's doing a great job. I just felt this was a bit of fun raising money for charity and as I can't post it twice then OS seems to be where it's creating the most interest.

So, enough said and let's just get on with our knitting. Happy clickety clacking everyone.
  • Great post :T , off to make some little hats now.
Perhaps a good way to start children/grandchildren knitting - a small worthwhile project, soon completed and not enough time to get bored!
