Hi if there is folk out there that aren't very sure how to knit ,why not nip into your local pensioners pop-in parlour .I guarantee there will be some lady in there who will be more than happy to help.Just look for someone over the age of 60 odd as we were nearly all taught how to knit during and after the War. In my case it went with listening to the wireless (Radio to you young'uns) whilst my Mum mended my brothers shirts, and turned the sheets 'sides-to-middle'.I have knitted for all of my 7 grandchildren and each one has their own 'cosy' (blanket). My eldest grandson is 15 and his is in West Ham colours and he still has it on his bed.
It is quite easy to pick up and if anyone lives in the Medway area I'll show them how meself.
Get clicking folks ,men and women knit.I'm off to the Knit and stirch fair at Ally Pally next Sunday go along and anyone there will show you how to get started. My middle brother can still knit after learning over 60 years ago during the Blitz.0 -
Jackie,
My eleven year old son is probably the best knitter in our house. He was determined to get his knitting badge in scouts and we spent many an hour practising. It was frustrating teaching him at the time, but we laugh about it now. I envy you your patience in offering to help others learn to knit.

I've just printed the instructions for myself and my friend who is going into hospital soon and dreading the boredom, she is a speedy knitter and should soon clock up the hats. Well done to the op for this one - a very worthy cause as well. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

How many have you made so far?
I have only done 9 - 3 multi-coloured, 3 pink and 3 khaki (for the ones in the army!) - my cross-stitch keeps beckoning!

Hats entertainment
Some of you may remember our Supergran project - you know, the thing where we knit lots of little hats and put them on our bottles in branches of the fine sandwich shop EAT. Well, it's time to start knitting 2005's batch. Last year you helped us knit 24,000 hats, which helped us raise £12,000 to help elderly people stay warm during winter. This year we want to knit 80,000 hats, so please pick up your needles, cast on and let the knitting begin - check www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/supergran to find out how it all works.
it's such a simple thing to do and a great way to use up those scraps of wool, we're not going to save money but it sounds like fun and every one raises 50p for Help the Aged.
For those who may never have knitted before and would like to take part in this project a few tips:
1) Check out your local Charity Shops - they often have a pot with knitting needles in (of various sizes) and are far cheaper than buying brand new!
2) While in the Charity Shop ... have a look for some odd balls of wool.
3) If you can't find any wool ... but the Charity Shop has a handknitted jumper ... buy that instead! You can un-pick the jumper (very OS!! LOL ) and wind it back up into a ball.
4) Even if you have never knitted before ... it would be a fun activity to take part in over the Winter months; adding another string to your bow, so to speak.
Pink .... our Mum sat us all down at the 5yo mark and taught us all how to knit, crochet, sew on a button and ..... darn! LOL Her words re: knitting still ring in my head from time to time (and I haven't knitted for YEARS!). Her "chant" was: "In, over, through and off. In, over, through and off!" :rotfl:
... *at least ... I think that was knitting*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks For bumping this
I didn't see it last year. I have looooooaaaads of odd bits of wool - now I have something to do with them. Will help with the declutter goal - I can't bring myself to bin perfectly good, serviceable wool.
